Student answer (Band 4.0)

The process diagram depicts the information about how a machine arm work and the functions that performed by joints like a human arm. All the arm functions controled by a computer.

Overall, the diagram illustrates that a machine can work like a human but the main difference is that human can work in hours but a machine can work in minutes that make a big difference and make it reliable to use.The gripper use in machine is much more stronger then an human grip.

this describes that a ,achine is much batter than a human work beacuse ut lakes the chances of errors and bugs but as far as pros are concerned there is always cones happened a machine can be very dangerous in sense of blasting and damages.

But in my opinion machines and humans both are willing to do things in better ways because humans are the one who made the machines so calling them worse then machines is not suitable.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 3.0

The response fails to fulfill the core requirements of an Academic Task 1 report. Instead of summarising the process diagram and reporting the main structural features of the mechanical arm—such as the base, pivot, shoulder, elbow, wrist, and computer-controlled motors—the writer attempts to write an independent opinion essay comparing humans and machines. This is a fundamental misinterpretation of the task type, as Task 1 requires an objective summary of visual data rather than a personal essay discussing pros, cons, and opinions. Furthermore, the visual data is not reported accurately, with irrelevant speculative comparisons about working hours and strength. Consequently, this falls below the descriptors for Band 4, as the response is largely tangential to the actual prompt.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 4.0

The organisation of the text is weak and lacks the structural conventions expected of an IELTS report. The response is divided into short, disjointed paragraphs that read more like an essay introduction and conclusion rather than a coherent data summary. Logical progression is absent because the writer jumps erratically between machine functions, speculative human comparisons, and personal opinions. Cohesive devices are minimal and sometimes misused, such as 'that make a big difference' and 'but as far as pros are concerned there is always cones happened', leading to choppy and difficult reading. Paragraphing is not used sufficiently or appropriately to structure the flow of ideas, aligning with Band 4 descriptors.

Lexical Resource — Band 4.0

The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, heavily relying on simple everyday words such as 'machine', 'arm', 'work', 'human', and 'better'. There are numerous spelling and word-choice errors, including 'controled' instead of controlled, 'batter' instead of better, 'cones' instead of cons, and 'beacuse ut lakes' instead of because it lacks. The writer attempts some topic-related vocabulary such as 'process diagram', 'functions', and 'sensors', but these are overshadowed by frequent lexical inaccuracies and non-standard collocations ('human grip', 'danger in sense of blasting'). The lexical range is limited and frequently strains the reader, placing it firmly at Band 4.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.0

Grammatical control is weak throughout the response. The text contains a high frequency of basic structural errors, run-on sentences, and severe punctuation slips, such as missing capital letters at the start of sentences ('this describes that a ,achine...'). There are frequent omissions of essential verbs and articles, as seen in 'how a machine arm work' and 'the gripper use in machine'. Complex sentence forms are attempted but are generally faulty and lack control. The majority of sentences contain errors that frequently impede communication and distort meaning, matching the criteria for Band 4.
