The diagram below shows how a mechanical arm works, and how the joints that make up the arm function in the same way as those in a human arm. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

The diagram illustrates how a mechanical arm operates and shows how its joints perform functions similar to those of a human arm.

Overall, the mechanical arm consists of a base, three joints, three motors and a gripper, all of which are controlled by a computer. The shoulder, elbow and wrist perform functions comparable to those of the corresponding joints in a human arm, while the gripper can be replaced by different tools.

The arm is attached to a base, which is normally stationary but can occasionally be moved. A pivot connects the base to the shoulder, allowing the entire arm to rotate. The shoulder can raise and lower the arm, while the elbow provides further movement and flexibility. At the other end, the wrist allows the gripper to flex and rotate. Each of these three joints is connected to a separate motor, which is controlled precisely by a computer.

At the end of the arm, the gripper contains built-in sensors that control the amount of force used to hold an object. In addition, the gripper can be replaced with alternative end-effectors, including a spray-painting tool, a drill or equipment for welding metal. Thus, the mechanical arm can perform a range of tasks by using different attachments.
