The diagram below shows how a mechanical arm works, and how the joints that make up the arm function in the same way as those in a human arm. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

The diagram illustrates how a mechanical arm works and shows the different joints and components which allow it to perform tasks in a similar way to a human arm.

Overall, the mechanical arm consists of several motors and joints that control its movements, while a computer is used for controlling the motors precisely. It can also be fitted with different end-effectors depending on the task that needs to be performed.

The arm is mounted on a base, which is usually stationary or occasionally movable. Above the base, there is a shoulder joint which allows the arm to raise and lower. A pivot also enables the arm to rotate. Further along the arm, the elbow joint gives flexibility and allows the arm to bend. After that, the wrist joint allows the gripper or another end-effector to flex and rotate. These movements are controlled by three motors which are placed at different points of the arm.

At the end of the arm, there is a gripper with built-in sensors that controls the amount of force when holding an object. However, the gripper can be replaced with other tools for different purposes. For example, a spray-painting tool, a drill or equipment for welding metal can be attached. The computer controls the motors with precision, allowing the mechanical arm to perform many different industrial tasks.
