IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how a mechanical arm works, and how the joints that make up the arm function in the same way as those in a human arm. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
The diagram shows the procedure of a mechanical arm and campares the funcationality of its joints to those of a human arm.
Overall, it is cleared that the mechanical system is powered and control by electricity ,with each individual joint mimicking a specific part of the human arm to execute precise movements.
In terms of control the machine arms is genrallly controlled by the computer ,moreever the computer maintain the three all motors .these motors is installed in various position in the arm and these motors also drive the all joint sections ,also allow the robotic structure perform diffirent tasks .
regarding the joint functionality , the mechnical arm mostly relay on articulated parts .that woek similer human arm.the base motor also work like shoulder joint ,allowing multidirectional movements . Furthermore , the middle section work like an elbow ,providing flexibility and reach . while the end effector work like the human wrist .

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The student successfully addresses the main parts of the task by summarising the mechanical arm diagram and comparing its joint functionality to a human arm, touching upon the computer control, motors, and end-effectors. However, the response contains several inaccuracies in describing the visual data. For instance, the student states that the 'base motor also work like shoulder joint', whereas the diagram clearly separates the base, pivot, and shoulder into distinct components. Additionally, the description of how the computer maintains the motors ('computer maintain the three all motors') is imprecise and fails to accurately capture the precision control hierarchy shown in the visual data. While an overview is attempted ('Overall, it is cleared that...'), the overall development of ideas is limited and contains minor misreadings of the source diagram, placing the response firmly at Band 5.0.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The text is organised into three paragraphs, including an introduction, an overview, and a body section, showing some basic structure. However, logical progression is hindered by frequent mechanical and faulty cohesive devices, as well as poor referencing. For instance, the phrase 'moreever the computer maintain the three all motors .these motors is installed...' creates abrupt transitions and disrupted flow. Furthermore, paragraphing is unconventional, grouping the overview sentence with the introduction rather than giving it a distinct structural role, and the final body paragraph merges multiple distinct features into a run-on sequence ('...elbow ,providing flexibility and reach . while the end effector work like...'). Overall organisation shows some structural attempt, but cohesion is inadequate and repetitive, reflecting a Band 5.0 level.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is relatively basic and repetitive, with noticeable spelling and word-choice errors that occasionally cause difficulty for the reader. Examples of lexical errors include 'campares' instead of compares, 'funcationality' instead of functionality, 'cleared' instead of clear, 'genrallly' instead of generally, and 'diffirent' instead of different. The student attempts some less common vocabulary related to the prompt, such as 'multidirectional movements' and 'end effector', but these are undermined by widespread spelling inaccuracies and awkward collocations like 'machine arms' and 'work similer human arm'. The lexical range is limited but minimally adequate for conveying a rudimentary understanding of the task, meeting the criteria for Band 5.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response features a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying heavily on simple sentences with frequent attempts at complex or compound structures that are faulty. There are persistent errors in subject-verb agreement and article usage, such as 'the machine arms is genrallly controlled', 'the computer maintain the three all motors', and 'these motors is installed'. Punctuation is handled poorly throughout, featuring irregular spacing before periods and commas, and sentence boundaries are frequently blurred by fragments, such as starting a sentence with 'that woek similer human arm'. The high frequency of grammatical and mechanical errors causes noticeable difficulty for the reader, aligning with Band 4.5 or 5.0, with the stronger elements of basic sentence construction pulling it to a 5.0.
