Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response covers the main features of the diagram, identifying key components such as the computer, motors, base, pivot, shoulder, elbow, wrist, gripper, and alternative end-effectors. However, the student's attempt to explain the functions of the alternative end-effectors ('the spary paint is used to spray paint in less time... and the drill is ude to make holles') relies heavily on outside generalisation rather than strictly reporting the diagram's visual information. The overview is weak, as the response lacks a clear introductory summary of how the mechanical arm operates overall. Despite these shortcomings, all parts of the visual prompt are touched upon, earning a Band 5.5.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
The text is written as a single, uninterrupted run-on block paragraph without any punctuation or capitalisation to separate sentences or ideas. This lack of paragraphing and sentence boundaries significantly impedes logical progression and readability. While there are some basic linking devices ('and', 'which', 'on the another side'), referencing is often unclear, such as the pronoun use and stringing clauses together with coordinating conjunctions. Cohesive devices are inadequate and repetitive, making it difficult to follow the flow of information. This level of organisation aligns with a Band 4.5, pulling down the overall coherence of the response.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The vocabulary used is very basic and repetitive, with numerous spelling errors throughout the text (e.g., 'machanical', 'moror', 'conected', 'atttached', 'movent', 'flexbility', 'holles'). There are attempts to use topic-specific terminology derived directly from the diagram, such as 'pivot', 'shoulder', 'elbow', and 'gripper', which shows a minimally adequate range. However, inaccurate word choices and frequent spelling mistakes cause strain for the reader and impede smooth communication at times. The lexical range and accuracy are characteristic of Band 4.5.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.0
The response consists almost entirely of a single, run-on compound sentence joined repeatedly by 'and' with a complete absence of periods, commas, or standard punctuation. There is a very limited range of grammatical structures attempted, and the total lack of sentence boundaries leads to frequent structural errors. Subject-verb agreement and article usage are also problematic (e.g., 'the diagram displays how a machanical arm work', 'is precsion control od moror'). Because the grammatical control is severely undermined by run-on structures and punctuation errors, the response fits the descriptor for Band 4.0.
