IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how a mechanical arm works, and how the joints that make up the arm function in the same way as those in a human arm. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The pictorial diagram illustrtes the work of mechanical arm and joints that manufacture the arm functios in the similar way as those in a human arm.
Overall, it can be seen that the computar plays a vital role as its control the motors for further steps.
To start with, computer has control all three motors. First motor is become shoulder for arm function to raises arm. Mechanical arm's elbow allows movements and provide more flexibility by second motor. By using third motor mechanica arm can built-in sensors control froce by gripper. Moreover, wrist allows gripper to rotate and flex.
Furthermore, pivote which is located in lower side enables arm to rotate. finally, alternative end-effectors spray to print the mechanical arm.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response is hindered by failing to meet the minimum word count requirement, falling short at 120 words. While the student attempts to describe the diagram, the information is only partially addressed, and key features are under-developed or inaccurately reported. For instance, the relationship between the computer, the motors, and the specific arm joints is described in a fragmented and confusing manner, such as claiming that 'First motor is become shoulder' and misinterpreting the end-effectors as 'spray to print the mechanical arm'. The overview is overly simplistic, and the overall progression lacks the thorough coverage and clear reporting expected for a complete task summary.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
There is some basic organisation attempted through paragraphing, and the response uses standard transitional markers like 'To start with' and 'Furthermore'. However, there is no clear overall progression or logical flow. Cohesive devices are frequently inaccurate or used mechanically, leading to choppy and disjointed sentences. For example, referencing and connections between clauses are unclear, such as 'By using third motor mechanica arm can built-in sensors control froce by gripper.' Paragraphing is also somewhat erratic, resulting in an arrangement that lacks cohesion and makes it difficult for the reader to follow the structural relationship of the mechanical arm.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary range is limited and minimally adequate for the task, with noticeable errors that impede communication. There are frequent spelling errors, such as 'illustrtes', 'computar', 'mechanica', 'froce', 'pivote', and incorrect word forms like 'functios' instead of 'function'. Attempts to use less common vocabulary or technical terms from the prompt result in awkward phrasing and misuse of collocations, such as 'spray to print the mechanical arm'. These lexical inaccuracies and persistent spelling mistakes mean the writer struggles to convey precise meanings clearly.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writer employs a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying mostly on simple sentences with frequent attempts at complex forms that are faulty. There are persistent errors in verb tenses, subject-verb agreement, and missing articles, which cause difficulty for the reader. Examples include 'the work of mechanical arm and joints that manufacture the arm functios', 'computer has control all three motors', and 'First motor is become shoulder'. Punctuation is also erratic in places, and the high frequency of grammatical errors prevents the response from achieving a higher band.
