IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how a mechanical arm works, and how the joints that make up the arm function in the same way as those in a human arm. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The diagram presents information on how a mechanical arm functions.

Overall, the movement of whole construct is depended on 2 functioning units, Which is controll and comand.

It starts with with computer controlling key parts of motion and resulting in mobility of the arm.

3 motors are required for the arm to operate accordingly.

First, the computer inputs the comands and transfers the information to the respected motors.

The motors runs directs specific part of the arms, The prior motor is attached to the working of elbows providing motion and agility on the axle, while the secondary motor conveys the vertical movement.

the latter motor assist the grippers for application of force.

Secondly the contruct consist of 4 essential part, from base to wrist.

The base provides stability and endurance towards imbalance, while pivot enable the free movement of the arm. The wrist helps gripper to rotate.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

The response addresses the task only partially and falls slightly short of the minimum length requirement, containing 147 words instead of the required 150 words. While the student attempts to summarise the main features of the mechanical arm, the information provided is somewhat limited and omits several key details shown in the diagram, such as the computer control connection to multiple motors and the various alternative end-effectors like welding and drilling. The overview is very basic, stating that the movement depends on functioning units, but it lacks a clear, comprehensive summary of the overall mechanical system. To move up, the writer needs to ensure the word count requirement is met and present a more fully developed account of all major stages and components illustrated in the diagram.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

There is some basic organisation in the response, but it lacks a clear overall progression. The essay is broken into short paragraphs, yet the sequencing of ideas feels disjointed and mechanical. For instance, the transition between discussing the computer and motors in the second paragraph and the structural parts in the final paragraph lacks a smooth logical bridge. Furthermore, cohesive devices are used inadequately or inaccurately, such as starting paragraphs with abrupt transitional words like 'First,' and 'Secondly the contruct consist of...'. Referencing is also occasionally unclear, making it difficult to follow how the different parts of the arm relate to one another. To improve, the writer should focus on logically grouping related information and using a wider, more natural range of cohesive ties to guide the reader seamlessly through the text.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is limited but minimally adequate for conveying basic ideas about the mechanical arm. The student attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'construct', 'agility', and 'endurance', but these attempts are accompanied by noticeable errors in word choice, collocation, and spelling, including 'depended' instead of dependent, 'controll and comand' instead of control and command, 'respected' instead of respective, and 'contruct' instead of construct. These lexical inaccuracies and spelling slips can cause some difficulty for the reader. To achieve a higher band, the student must expand their lexical repertoire and use words with greater precision, ensuring correct word forms and minimizing spelling mistakes.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The writing demonstrates a very limited range of sentence structures, relying heavily on simple sentences alongside faulty attempts at complex ones. Frequent grammatical errors are present throughout the text, including subject-verb agreement issues ('The motors runs directs'), incorrect verb forms ('is depended'), missing articles, and awkward prepositional phrases. Punctuation and capitalization are also erratic, such as mid-sentence capital letters like 'Which is controll and comand.' and 'First, the computer inputs the comands'. These frequent errors create difficulty for the reader and restrict the response to a lower band. To progress, the writer needs to focus on mastering basic sentence construction, improving verb tense consistency, and eliminating frequent errors in punctuation and articles.
