IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how a mechanical arm works, and how the joints that make up the arm function in the same way as those in a human arm. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The diagram illustrates the working of a mechanical arm, whose joints works same as the joints of human arm.

Overall, the mechanical arm has three motors which are controlled by a computer. The arm has a base, shoulder, elbow, wrist and a gripper.

There are three motors attached to the arm. First one is linked with shoulder, the second one is attached to the elbow and the third one is linked with gripper. The arm has a base which is usually stationary and it moves sometimes. A shoulder is attached to the upper side of the base, which lowers or raises the arm. There is a pivot attached to the shoulder, which make the arm to rotate. Moving upward, there is an elbow, which provides flexibility to the arm and permit its movement. On the right side of the elbow, there is a long wrist, which makes the gripper rotate. Sometimes, alternative end-effectors such as spray paint, drills, and welding machine can replace gripper Finally, gripper is attached to the wrist. It has integrated sensors, which control force. All parts of the arm moves except the base, which is usually stationary. All three motors are linked to a computer which precisely cotrol them.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by outlining how the mechanical arm works, detailing its main components like the base, shoulder, elbow, wrist, and gripper, and mentioning the alternative end-effectors. An overview is provided, noting the computer control and the three motors. However, some aspects of the task are developed more fully than others; for example, the description of the motors' connections is slightly repetitive and lacks a fully synthesized comparison of how the joints mirror human anatomy as hinted at in the introduction. The information is generally accurate based on the visual data, but certain features, such as the exact pathways between the motors and the respective joints, could have been integrated more cohesively to present a more polished summary.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression from the introduction to the overview, followed by a sequential breakdown of the arm's components and functions. Paragraphing is utilized, separating the introduction, overview, and body details. However, cohesion is occasionally mechanical or faulty. For instance, transitional phrases between sentences are somewhat abrupt, and referencing is not always completely clear, such as the placement of 'Finally, gripper is attached to the wrist' at the end of the body paragraph after other details have already been discussed. Logical flow would be enhanced by grouping related components more tightly together, ensuring smoother transitions throughout the text.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating topic-specific terms from the diagram such as 'stationary', 'pivot', 'flexibility', and 'integrated sensors'. There are attempts to use less common vocabulary, though this is accompanied by some inaccuracy in word choice and collocation, such as 'moves sometimes' instead of 'occasionally movable' and 'spray paint' instead of 'spray painting' or 'paint spray guns'. Spelling and word-choice errors, including 'cotrol' instead of 'control' and missing articles like 'the' before 'gripper', are present but do not impede overall communication, placing the vocabulary use solidly at this level.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writing displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at relative clauses and participial phrases, such as 'which makes the gripper rotate' and 'providing flexibility to the arm'. However, there are some grammar and punctuation errors throughout the text. Noticeable issues include subject-verb agreement errors like 'whose joints works same' and 'All parts of the arm moves', missing plural forms or articles such as 'human arm', and awkward prepositional usage or missing articles. Fortunately, these errors are relatively sparse and rarely impede communication, allowing the reader to follow the mechanical descriptions without severe difficulty.
