IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how a mechanical arm works, and how the joints that make up the arm function in the same way as those in a human arm. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The given diagram illustrates the structure and operation of a mechanical arm, comparing its functional joints to those of a human arm.
Overall, the mechanical arm relies on three distinct electric motors managed by a computer to achive precise movements. Its structure mimics the human arm by using joints that corresponsing to the shoulder, elbow and wrist and effector acting as a hand.
At the bottom, the machine has stationary or moveable base. Above the base, the shoulder joint rises and lowers arm, while a pivot joint lets it rotate. Further up, the elbow joint allows the arm bend. At the end, the wrist joint lets the attached tool rotate and flex.
The standard tool at the end is a gripper, which has built-in sensors to control how tightly it holds things. Finally, this gripper can be swapped out for other tools depending on the job, such as a paint sprayer, a drill, or a welding tool.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by outlining how the mechanical arm functions and comparing its joints to a human arm. The key features of the diagram are properly selected and reported, covering the base, pivot, shoulder, elbow, wrist, and end-effectors. A clear overview is provided in the second paragraph, which outlines the computer-managed motors and the anatomical parallels. While the information is generally well-extended, the discussion remains slightly general in places without fully exploring every minor mechanical detail, which places it securely in the seven range. To reach a higher band, the description could offer even tighter integration between the control mechanisms and the specific movements of each joint.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The essay displays a clear logical organization and progression throughout. Information flows sensibly from the base and lower joints up to the arm components, the gripper, and finally the alternative end-effectors. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct conceptual stages of the mechanism. Cohesive devices such as 'At the bottom', 'Above the base', 'Further up', and 'Finally' are employed to guide the reader smoothly through the spatial arrangement of the diagram, though referencing and transitional phrases occasionally feel a bit standard rather than flexible, keeping the cohesion rating consistent with a solid seven.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating specific terms from the diagram such as 'stationary or moveable base', 'pivot joint', 'wrist joint', and 'end-effectors'. Less common lexical items are attempted, demonstrating a reasonable awareness of style and collocation in a technical context. However, there are a few spelling and word-choice errors, such as writing 'achive' instead of 'achieve' and 'corresponsing' instead of 'corresponding', alongside minor phrasing awkwardness like 'lets the arm bend' instead of allowing the arm to bend. These occasional slips prevent the vocabulary score from rising into the higher bands.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The writing demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and participial phrases adequately. There are several error-free sentences, and the overall control of grammar and punctuation allows the message to be communicated clearly. However, a number of grammatical errors persist, particularly missing articles (e.g., 'lowers arm' instead of 'lowers the arm', 'lets arm bend' instead of 'lets the arm bend') and minor spelling-related word formation issues. Because these errors occur with some frequency while only rarely impeding communication, the response accurately reflects a standard six level for grammatical control.
