IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how a mechanical arm works, and how the joints that make up the arm function in the same way as those in a human arm. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
The diagram depicts the production and working of the mechanical arm working similarly to a human arm.
Overall, it is evident that the central computer system is used to control motors which are installed in the mechanical arm. Additionally, the machine closely mimics the human anatomy by replacing human parts with mechanical parts.
The proper networking system is set up to control the motors installed in the functioning of the mechanical arm. In total, three motors are installed to power the arm. Although, each motor is made for their own specific task.
The base is the main part that could stabilized and hold the entire structure. The pivot enables arm to rotate this act same as joints of human arm. On the other hand, wrists and gripper also working equivalent to human wrists and figures to grip anything. While, pivot corresponding to shoulder for movement of full arm .

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response only partially addresses the task requirements. Furthermore, the length requirement is not met, as the essay falls one word short of the 150-word minimum. While the overview attempts to summarise the diagram, the reporting of main features is limited and contains inaccuracies, such as misinterpreting the mechanical parts as replacing human anatomy rather than mimicking human joints functionally. Key components from the visual data, such as the computer precision control and specific end-effectors, are only superficially mentioned or underdeveloped. To achieve a higher band, the writer must ensure the word count requirement is met, avoid inaccuracies in describing mechanical functions, and provide a more fully developed account of the main features shown in the diagram.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
There is some organisation evident in the essay, with an introduction, an overview paragraph, and body sections, but it lacks a clear overall progression. Paragraphing is attempted, but ideas within paragraphs feel somewhat disjointed. Cohesive devices are used minimally or inaccurately; for instance, the transition 'While, pivot corresponding to shoulder' is awkward and fails to connect ideas smoothly. Repetitive phrasing and faulty referencing also disrupt the logical flow. To improve, the writer needs to ensure that sentences within paragraphs are logically linked and that cohesive devices are used accurately to guide the reader clearly through the comparison between the mechanical and human arm joints.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is limited but minimally adequate to convey a basic understanding of the diagram. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'production', 'anatomy', and 'end-effectors', but there are noticeable word choice and collocation errors, including writing 'could stabilized' instead of 'could stabilise' and confusing 'figures' with 'fingers'. These lexical errors and awkward word formations cause some difficulty for the reader. To reach a higher band, the student should expand their range of vocabulary, ensure correct word forms are used consistently, and focus on precise academic collocations related to describing processes and diagrams.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writer demonstrates a limited range of structures, relying mostly on simple sentences, while attempts at complex sentence forms are often faulty. There are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, including issues with verb forms and tenses, such as 'working similarly' versus 'works', missing auxiliary verbs, incorrect prepositions, and punctuation mistakes like unnecessary commas. These frequent errors cause strain and difficulty for the reader. To improve, the student should practice forming accurate complex sentences, pay closer attention to subject-verb agreement, and eliminate basic grammatical inaccuracies.
