IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how a mechanical arm works, and how the joints that make up the arm function in the same way as those in a human arm. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
The diagram illustrate operational mechanism of robotic mechanical arm. Converserly, how its structural joints works of a human arms.
Overall, the mechanical arm is currently managed by a computer which drives three distinct motors that manipulate joints and closely miroor the human arms. Furthermore, the whole task functions to be fitted gripper and vaious tool works for industrial task.
In terms of control, the central computer provides precision control of three motors that functions
base movable. Moreover, the base of this machanism enables arm to rotate the machine. Moving along with the structure, the shoulder the machanism works to raise and lower the arm same as human anatomy. An elbow joints provides flexiblity and facility just like its human counterpart.
Regarding the specific arm, wrist joints allows gripper both flex and rotate. however, this gripper

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response addresses the task only partially and falls short of the minimum 150-word requirement, stopping abruptly at 136 words. While the student attempts to summarise the diagram showing how a mechanical arm works and compares its joints to human anatomy, the coverage is incomplete and features are under-developed. For instance, the reference to alternative end-effectors is mentioned as a 'vaious tool works for industrial task' but not fully detailed in relation to the diagram. The overview is weak, and the presentation of information becomes fragmented towards the end, leading to a restricted and partially unclear summary of the main features.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
The text demonstrates some overall organisation into paragraphs, but there is no clear overall progression. Cohesive devices are frequently inadequate, inaccurate, or repetitive, such as the mechanical use of transitional phrases like 'In terms of control' and 'Moreover'. Referencing is also faulty in places, making it difficult to follow the logical links between ideas. Furthermore, the abrupt ending of the text disrupts the flow and structural integrity of the response, preventing a smooth progression of information across the piece.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is limited and minimally adequate for the task. There are noticeable lexical and spelling errors that cause some difficulty for the reader, such as 'miroor' instead of mirror, 'vaious' instead of various, 'machanism' instead of mechanism, and 'Converserly' used incorrectly for contrast. The student attempts less common vocabulary items like 'anatomy', 'counterpart', and 'precision control', but these attempts are often marred by inaccuracies in word choice, form, and spelling.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The response displays a very limited range of structures, with frequent errors that can cause difficulty for the reader. Simple sentences predominate, and attempts at more complex structures are faulty, as seen in the ungrammatical opening sentence 'The diagram illustrate operational mechanism of robotic mechanical arm' and fragment clauses like 'Converserly, how its structural joints works of a human arms.' There are frequent errors in verb forms, subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'the diagram illustrate'), missing articles (e.g., 'of a human arms'), and prepositions, which noticeably hinder readability.
