IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how a mechanical arm works, and how the joints that make up the arm function in the same way as those in a human arm. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
The diagram decribes working of a mechanical arm and how the joints that make up the arm functiom in a likewise way as those in a human arm.
A compuyer is an elctronic device which is used for the accurate control of motors. It generally consists of three motors. The first motor act as a gripper which has sensors already built in it which control force. The gripper is connected to a part which has same function as the human arm which allows gripper to flex or rotate. The second motor is connected to a part which serves the function of an elbow allowing movement. It is connected in such a way that it has a link between both wrist and shoulder to which third motor is connected. The shoulder raises or lower arms.It is attached with the pivot enabling the arm to rotate.Beneath the shoulder is the base which is stationary in most cases, but moveable in some cases.
Overall, the diagram below illustrates construction of a mechanical arm and its cohesion with human arm.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
The response addresses the task only partially, earning a lower band score due to inaccurate reporting of mechanical features and misinterpreting how the components connect. For example, the student states that the first motor 'act as a gripper which has sensors already built in it', whereas the diagram clearly shows that a computer controls three separate motors, with the gripper possessing the built-in sensors separately. Furthermore, the overview is extremely brief and merely repeats the prompt rather than synthesizing the main features of the diagram. To achieve a higher score, the writer must carefully study the visual data, avoid confusing the functional relationships between the motors and joints, and provide a clear overview outlining the core stages or components of the system.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The text shows some overall organisation, but there is no clear logical progression between sentences, and paragraphing is severely neglected. The entire body of the report is squashed into a single dense block of text, followed by an isolated single-sentence conclusion. Cohesive devices are minimal and mechanical, relying on basic sequencing words without effective referencing. For instance, phrases like 'The first motor', 'The second motor', and 'It is connected' create a repetitive, list-like structure rather than a flowing description. To improve, the writer needs to group related information into distinct paragraphs (such as separating the control mechanism, the arm joints, and the end-effectors) and use a wider variety of cohesive devices to link ideas smoothly.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and barely adequate for the task, containing noticeable lexical errors and spelling mistakes that occasionally impede communication. Words are frequently misspelled due to typing slips, such as 'decribes' instead of describes, 'functiom' instead of function, 'compuyer', and 'elctronic'. There are also awkward word choices and collocations, such as 'cohesion with human arm' instead of functional comparison or analogy. While the student attempts some topic-specific vocabulary like 'gripper', 'shoulder', and 'stationary', the limited range and frequent inaccuracies prevent the response from reaching a higher band. To progress, the writer should focus on expanding technical vocabulary related to processes and diagrams, while eliminating basic spelling and word-form errors.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The grammatical structures attempted are fairly basic, and attempts at more complex sentences frequently result in errors. There are notable issues with subject-verb agreement and article usage, such as 'working of a mechanical arm' missing the definite article, and 'The first motor act as a gripper' where the verb lacks the third-person singular 's'. Additionally, run-on sentences and punctuation spacing issues (such as missing spaces after periods, e.g., 'motors. It generally') disrupt the flow of reading. While simple sentences are generally understandable, frequent errors in grammatical patterns and punctuation cause difficulty for the reader. Incorporating a wider mix of accurate complex structures and carefully proofreading for agreement and punctuation would significantly improve this area.
