IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how a mechanical arm works, and how the joints that make up the arm function in the same way as those in a human arm. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
The diagram illustrate the operation of the mechanical arm alongwith the joints which merge to form arms and demonstrate similarities with the human arm for various condition.
Overall , it describe the main functions of the joints including displacement of multiple joints can be as per the requirement . Gripper is a form of sensor used to control the build in force similar to the human finger while wrist allows to rotate the gripper and its function is similar to human wrist. Elbow allows the flexible movement , pivot enables arm to rotate and shoulder can change the height as per the condition .
Conversely , a human uses its finger to hold the machine gun or to share instruction for the start and off .person can use the shoulder to work in lower direction or high position while elbow provide the flexibity or to maintain the motion in differernt location .

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response addresses the task only partially. While it attempts to summarise the main features of the mechanical arm and its comparison to a human arm, the overview is weak and the information is presented in a somewhat disjointed manner. The writer mentions several joints such as the gripper, wrist, elbow, pivot, and shoulder, but some details are underdeveloped or inaccurate. Furthermore, the final paragraph introduces irrelevant speculation about a human holding a machine gun, which is not supported by the visual data. To reach a higher level, the response must provide a clearer overview of the entire mechanism without drifting into external comparisons that lack basis in the provided diagram.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
There is some organisation evident in the text, but it lacks a clear overall progression. The response is divided into three paragraphs, yet the logical flow between sentences and paragraphs is frequently disrupted. Cohesive devices are used inadequately or inappropriately, such as the abrupt transition using 'Conversely' in the final paragraph, which does not accurately signal a contrast between the mechanical functions and human actions being discussed. Additionally, referencing is sometimes unclear, making it difficult to follow how the mechanical and human analogies interrelate. To improve, the writer should ensure a logical sequence of ideas with appropriate and accurate cohesive ties throughout.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and minimally adequate for the task. The writer attempts some less common terms related to the diagram, such as 'displacement', 'flexible movement', and 'sensor', but noticeable errors in word choice and collocations occur, such as 'build in force' instead of 'built-in force' and 'lower direction'. There are also awkward phrasings like 'share instruction for the start and off'. These lexical inaccuracies cause occasional difficulty for the reader. To achieve a higher band, the student needs to expand their vocabulary range and use terms with greater precision and correct collocation.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response displays a limited range of sentence structures, with attempts at complex sentences often proving faulty. There are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation that can cause difficulty for the reader. Examples of errors include subject-verb agreement issues, such as 'The diagram illustrate' instead of 'illustrates', missing articles like 'human uses its finger', and incorrect prepositions or modifiers such as 'in lower direction or high position'. Punctuation is also mishandled, notably with spaces placed before commas. To progress, the writer must focus on increasing the accuracy of basic grammatical patterns and reducing the frequency of structural errors.
