IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how a mechanical arm works, and how the joints that make up the arm function in the same way as those in a human arm. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
the diagram illustrates how a mechanical arm works and shows the different parts that alloow it to perform different movements similar to a human's arm.
Overall, the mechanical arm is completely controlled or operated by a computer that precisely control the 3 motors of the arm. These motors allow the arm to move on 3 axis , rotate, and perform different flexible tasks. The arm also have a gripper at the end that is used to hold an object or a thing. also the gripper has built-in sensors and can be replaces by other tools depending on the work.
At the bottom, the arm is attached to a usually stationary base but can sometimes be moved. Above shoulder their is a pivot that makes the arm rotate completely, while the elbow provides flexibility. Wrist in right side of elbow helps to rotate and flex.
At the end of the arm, the gripper has a built in sensors that controll the amount of force used when holding object, in addition, different end tools can be used or attached for specific reason, for example a spray-painting tool or a drill, equipment for welding.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by summarizing the main features of the mechanical arm and how its components function similarly to a human arm, including the base, pivot, shoulder, elbow, wrist, and gripper. However, some areas are under-developed or lack full clarity. For instance, the mention of the arm moving on 3 axes is slightly vague, and certain mechanical features described in the text, such as how the computer precisely controls the motors, could be more fully integrated with the visual data. The overview at the beginning is somewhat brief, which is characteristic of this level, but it successfully outlines the general function and layout of the diagram.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The text presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt to structure the information logically, starting with an introduction and overview, moving to the central mechanics, and finishing with the base, joints, and end-effectors. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical or faulty. Transitions between paragraphs and sentences can feel abrupt, and referencing is occasionally unclear, such as the sudden shift to discussing the base and shoulder without smoother transitional phrases. Paragraphing is used, but the internal logical progression within paragraphs could be tighter to achieve a more natural flow of ideas.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating specific technical terms from the diagram such as 'computer', 'motors', 'gripper', 'pivot', and 'end-effectors'. There are attempts to use less common vocabulary, but this is accompanied by some inaccuracy in word choice, word form, and spelling. Examples include 'alloow', 'replaces' instead of 'replaced', and 'controll'. These errors do not impede communication, but they reflect the constraints of this level where precision in word forms and spelling is not yet fully consistent.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The writing demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as 'Overall, the mechanical arm is completely controlled or operated by a computer that precisely control the 3 motors of the arm.' There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, including subject-verb agreement issues ('that precisely control', 'the arm also have', 'the gripper has a built in sensors that controll'), missing articles ('Wrist in right side'), and awkward prepositional phrases ('Above shoulder their is a pivot'). Although these errors are present, they are not frequent enough to severely distort meaning, and they rarely impede communication, placing the grammatical performance right at this band.
