IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how a mechanical arm works, and how the joints that make up the arm function in the same way as those in a human arm. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
There is a mechanical arm diagram that illustrates its working and shows how there joints enable the arm to move just like human arm.
In mechanical arm there is a base which is mostly stationary or eventfully moveable, a base have shoulder and pivot where shoulder can be powered through motor which is controlled through comuter to make sure its precision, where as pivot plays a role by enabling an arm to rotate. Then there is an elbow which is connected to shoulder that allows movement same as human arm and also provides flexibility its also operate through motor.
Following through this there is a wrist which allows gripper or alternative end-effector to spin and versatile. In last resembling with human arm in the end there is hand tht can allow human to make grip on anything so it can hold any material just like that in mechanical arm there is also a gripper which uses built-in sensors to control force so that gripper can regulate how tightly it holds an object. Gripper also powered thorugh motor and its motor can be operate from computer to control its precision.
There are also three different images which is known as end effectors that is alternative which are spray paint, drill holes and weld metal for welding.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify the main components and explain several functions, including the base, shoulder, pivot, elbow, wrist and sensor-controlled gripper. You also mention the three alternative end-effectors, so the response is relevant to the diagram. However, the account does not clearly summarise the overall arrangement or explain how the computer connects to and controls the three motors. The comparison with a human arm is also asserted rather than developed: the hand analogy is useful, but the diagram’s joint functions could be compared more systematically. Some details are inaccurate or unclear, such as saying the wrist lets the gripper “spin and versatile.” A clearer overview of the arm’s structure and a more precise account of the motor connections would make the key features more complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response follows a broadly sensible route from the base and shoulder up the arm to the gripper, then mentions the alternative end-effectors. This gives the reader a basic sense of the diagram’s parts. However, the progression is not consistently clear: the opening sentence is separate from the detailed description, and long sentences combine several components and functions without clear boundaries. Phrases such as “Following through this” and “In last” do not link ideas naturally, while repeated use of “there is” makes the account feel list-like. Organise the description into a brief overview followed by the arm’s structure and then the end-effectors, using clear references and transitions to show how each part connects.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant technical vocabulary, including “pivot,” “end-effector,” “built-in sensors,” and “control force,” which helps convey the diagram’s subject. There is some attempt to vary wording, but several choices are inaccurate or unnatural and make meaning less precise. For example, “spin and versatile” does not clearly describe the wrist’s ability to flex or rotate, and “make grip on anything” is an awkward way to describe holding an object. Spelling errors such as “comuter,” “tht,” and “thorugh” are also noticeable. Aim for accurate collocations and use the diagram’s functional terms directly, such as “flex or rotate” and “regulate gripping force.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt some longer sentences and use relative clauses, for example, “a pivot plays a role by enabling an arm to rotate.” However, complex sentences are often difficult to follow because clauses are joined without reliable punctuation, as in the sentence beginning “In mechanical arm there is a base.” There are frequent problems with articles, agreement and verb forms: “a base have,” “which is known,” and “its motor can be operate” are examples. Sentence boundaries and commas are also inconsistent, particularly in the long description of the gripper. These errors sometimes make relationships between parts unclear. Practise writing shorter, complete sentences first, then combine them with accurate relative clauses and check subject–verb agreement and verb forms.
