Student answer (Band 4.5)

The diagram describes the information of how a mechanical arm works, and shows how the joints that make up the arm function in the same way as those in a human arm.

According to the diagram, Computer-precision control of motors continue into the motor loops, the first motor allows elbow movements annd gives flaxibility and then pivot enables arm to rotate. The second motor have gripper which contains built-in sensors control force. The wrist in motor allows end-effector to flex, the shoulder at the bottom raises lower arm.

The third motor also associated with elbow and allow the functions.

The base is usually stationary but occasionally movable which which allows arm to rotate.

To conclude, The diagram shows the Computer-precision of motors which also develops in further loops and describes the work of machanical arm.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.5

The response identifies the diagram as a mechanical arm and mentions several relevant parts, including the motors, elbow, wrist, shoulder, gripper and base. However, the account is very brief and does not clearly explain how the components work together; some relationships are also misreported, such as saying the second motor has the gripper and associating the third motor with the elbow. The overview is vague, and the alternative end-effectors—spraying paint, drilling and welding—are omitted. The response also falls short of the 150-word minimum: 19 words copied from the prompt were not counted. To improve, give a clear overview, describe the arm from base to gripper accurately, and include the interchangeable tools and their uses.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0

There is a basic attempt to organise the response: it begins by introducing the diagram, gives some component details, and ends with a concluding sentence. This provides a simple overall shape, but the description does not progress clearly through the arm. For example, the elbow, pivot, gripper and wrist are presented in an order that makes their physical relationships difficult to follow, and the third motor is mentioned separately without a clear connection to the earlier account. Linking phrases such as “According to the diagram” and “To conclude” are used, but they do not establish precise relationships between ideas. Group the information by position or movement, and use clear references such as “at the base,” “above this,” and “at the end of the arm.”

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The response uses some relevant technical vocabulary, including “pivot,” “built-in sensors,” “end-effector” and “stationary,” showing an attempt to describe the diagram specifically. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unclear, such as “motor loops,” “describes the information,” and “develops in further loops.” Spelling errors, including “annd,” “flaxibility” and “machanical,” also reduce precision. The repeated use of “allows” and “shows” limits the range of description. Aim for accurate process language and use verbs that express the function of each part, such as “controls,” “rotates,” “raises” and “flexes.” Check technical terms and spelling carefully before submitting.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The response attempts both simple and joined sentence forms, and the opening sentence communicates the topic. However, control is inconsistent, with errors in agreement, verb forms, articles and sentence construction. For instance, “Computer-precision control of motors continue” has a subject–verb agreement problem, while “The second motor have gripper” uses an incorrect verb form and lacks an article. “The shoulder at the bottom raises lower arm” is also grammatically incomplete, and the final sentence has awkward capitalisation and structure. Repeated wording in “which which” further affects accuracy. Use shorter, complete sentences to describe each component, then check that each subject has the correct verb and that singular nouns have appropriate articles.
