IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how a mechanical arm works, and how the joints that make up the arm function in the same way as those in a human arm. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The diagram illustrates the the mechanism of a mechanical arm and the way joints make the arm to function as same as a human arm do.

Overall, the process involves various steps, computer controls the middle motor. One left side motor is connected to the shoulder, with the help of that arm performs upward and downward movement. While the Right side motor tend to control force.

The Middle motor also allows movement of elbow, assists in flexibity of the arm. Moreover, pivot aids the arm to make rotatary motion while wrist helps to grip, paint ,drill the holes or weld metals.Furthermore the base of arm is stationary or sometimes moveable.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

You identify the diagram as a mechanical arm and mention several relevant parts, including the pivot, wrist and base. However, key relationships are misreported: the left motor is linked to the elbow, the centre motor to the arm near the wrist, and the right motor to the gripper; the response instead assigns these functions differently. The wrist allows the gripper or another end-effector to flex or rotate, while the gripper’s sensors control force. The overview is also unclear and does not summarise the arm’s main arrangement or its alternative uses. The response is 40 words below the required minimum, which limits the detail available. Describe the components and their functions accurately, and include the alternative end-effectors shown.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response has a basic paragraph structure, with an opening, an overview-like paragraph and further details. Linking expressions such as “Overall,” “Moreover” and “Furthermore” show an attempt to connect ideas. However, the progression is difficult to follow because the component descriptions are not presented in a clear order, and some connections between parts and functions are confusing. For example, the motor assignments shift between paragraphs, while the final sentence combines the wrist’s function with painting, drilling and welding. Organise the description from the computer and motors down through the arm to the base, then explain the alternative end-effectors separately. This would make the relationships clearer and reduce the impression of disconnected points.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use some relevant technical vocabulary, including “mechanical arm,” “motor,” “pivot,” “stationary” and “moveable,” so the topic is generally recognisable. There are also attempts at more specific language, such as “rotatary motion.” However, several choices are inaccurate or awkward, including “flexibity,” “tend to control force” and “make rotatary motion.” “Grip” is also not the wrist’s stated function: the wrist enables the gripper or another end-effector to flex or rotate. Spelling and spacing errors, such as “paint ,drill,” reduce polish. Build precision by using the diagram’s terms consistently and choosing natural collocations such as “rotate,” “control the force applied” and “provide flexibility.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a relative clause in “the way joints make the arm…” and a sentence beginning “While…”. However, the range is limited and errors occur frequently enough to make some relationships hard to understand. Examples include “the the mechanism,” “make the arm to function,” and “as same as a human arm do,” where articles, verb patterns and agreement are not controlled. The sentence “Overall, the process involves various steps, computer controls the middle motor” joins two clauses incorrectly, and “One left side motor is connected to the shoulder” has an unclear grammatical relationship. Use complete, clearly linked sentences and check articles, verb forms and clause boundaries.
