IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how a mechanical arm works, and how the joints that make up the arm function in the same way as those in a human arm. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The diagram outlines the different procedures of how mechanical arm works with the help of joints as same as in human arm.
Overall, the process contain several steps, starting with three different controls of motorand ending with end efforts including spray paints, drill holes and weld metal
Three motors has been controlled with computer-precision ,that is linked with a gripper, an elbow and base section. initially, motor is attached with gripper, which is made up of build in sensors, used for compression and expansion of arm's mouth. second motor is linked with elbow that allows movement and give flexibility while performing task.
The last third motor is connected to base ,which is often moveable but usually stationary. base is controlled the shoulder and pivot section use to move the arm vertically or horizontally and enables arm to rotate respectively. at the end, end efforts like spray paint , dhave been done on mechanical arm with the help of workers or advanced tools.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You identify the diagram’s main components and give an overview that the system begins with computer-controlled motors and involves different end-effectors. You also describe functions such as the elbow providing flexibility and the pivot enabling rotation. However, several relationships are misreported: the third motor is not connected to the base, and the motors are not described as controlling the gripper, elbow and base in that way. The diagram shows motors linked to the elbow, arm near the wrist, and gripper; the base supports the arm, with the shoulder and pivot above it. The final examples are also not stages performed by workers: they are alternative tools that can replace the gripper. Clarifying these points and explaining the arm’s sequence more fully would make the summary more accurate.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overall statement, and details about the motors and arm components. This gives the reader a basic route through the information. However, progression is weakened by the unclear ordering in “initially,” “second motor,” and “last third motor,” especially because the connections are not presented in the diagram’s physical sequence. Some links between ideas are also difficult to follow, such as “base is controlled the shoulder and pivot section.” Use separate paragraphs for the overview and the component details, then describe the arm from its base and shoulder up to the gripper. More precise referencing and fewer abrupt transitions would improve cohesion.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant task vocabulary, including “mechanical arm,” “joints,” “gripper,” “elbow,” “flexibility,” and “pivot,” and you attempt to describe component functions. However, several word choices or forms are inaccurate or unclear: “end efforts” should be “end-effectors,” “compression and expansion of arm’s mouth” is not a suitable description of the gripper, and “spray paints, drill holes and weld metal” does not clearly name the alternative tools. “Three different controls of motor” is also imprecise. Choose terms that match the diagram, such as “three motors,” “gripping force,” and “spray gun, drill, and welding equipment.” More accurate collocations would make your meaning clearer and demonstrate a more controlled range.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including clauses explaining what the elbow and pivot do. However, errors in agreement, verb forms, articles, and sentence construction are frequent enough to make some relationships unclear. For example, “The process contain” needs subject–verb agreement, while “Three motors has been controlled” has incorrect agreement and passive form. In “base is controlled the shoulder,” the grammatical relationship between the base and shoulder is incomplete. Capitalisation and punctuation also need attention, particularly where sentences run together after “respectively.” Practise forming accurate present-simple descriptions of diagram features, and check each sentence for a clear subject, verb, and object. This would make your range of structures more reliable.
