IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how a mechanical arm works, and how the joints that make up the arm function in the same way as those in a human arm. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The given diagram illustrates the structure and working mechanism of a mechanical arm, comparing its joints to those of a human arm.
Overall, it is evident that the mechanical arm operates using three three electric motors controlled by a computer. Its key components-the shoulder elbow, wrist and gripper-closely miror the structure and movement of a human arm.
In terms of control and power, a central computer reguates by three motors with a high precision. One motor operates the elbow, another controls the wrist, and the third motor controls by gripper. The gripper is equipped with built-in sensor control force use to hold objects. Alternatively, the gripper can be replaced with other tools, such as a spray paint tool, a drill, or a welding tool.
Regarding movement, the arm features four main joints that function like human joints. The shoulder joint raises and lower the arm, while a pivot joint, which is enables arm to rotate. Further down, the elbow joints provides flexibility for bending, and the wrist joints enables the gripper to flex and rotate.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You cover the main features of the diagram: computer control, the three motors, the arm’s joints, the gripper’s sensors and the alternative end-effectors. The overview also identifies the arm’s human-like structure, and the details about the shoulder, pivot, elbow and wrist are generally grounded in the visual. This gives the report a clear account of both operation and movement. To make the description more fully developed, clarify the physical arrangement: for example, the arm rises from the base through the shoulder and elbow to the wrist and gripper. The comparison with a human arm is asserted, but could be made more explicit by matching each mechanical joint to its human counterpart. Also avoid the inaccurate phrase “three three electric motors.”
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The response is organised into a clear introduction, an overall summary and two body paragraphs, with the latter separating control and power from movement. This creates a logical progression, and signposts such as “Overall,” “In terms of control and power,” and “Regarding movement” help readers follow the description. The sequence from computer and motors to the arm’s joints is also easy to understand. To strengthen cohesion further, connect the components through their physical positions rather than presenting them mainly as separate facts—for instance, explain how the arm extends from the base and shoulder through the elbow to the wrist and gripper. Some transitions are slightly mechanical, but the overall organisation remains clear.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You use a suitable range of task-related vocabulary, including “mechanical arm,” “built-in sensor,” “flexibility,” “pivot,” and “alternative end-effectors.” These terms allow you to describe both the mechanism and its functions, and the meaning is generally clear. There is also some useful variation in how you introduce functions, such as “raises and lower” and “flex and rotate.” However, several spelling and word-choice slips reduce precision: “miror” should be “mirror,” “reguates” should be “regulates,” and “controls by gripper” is not a natural collocation. “Welding tool” is understandable, but “welding equipment” or “welding end-effector” is more precise. More accurate technical phrasing would show the flexibility and control already attempted here.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a range of sentence forms, including a relative clause in “a pivot joint, which is enables arm to rotate” and a complex sentence beginning “while.” The overall meaning is usually recoverable, but errors in agreement, verb forms, articles and sentence construction are frequent enough to limit accuracy. Examples include “the shoulder joint raises and lower,” “the elbow joints provides,” and “the wrist joints enables”; singular subjects require singular verb forms, while plural subjects require plural forms. The clause about the pivot also needs restructuring, such as “the pivot enables the arm to rotate.” In addition, “the third motor controls by gripper” has an incomplete grammatical pattern. Aim to make each sentence accurate before adding complexity.
