IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how a mechanical arm works, and how the joints that make up the arm function in the same way as those in a human arm. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The diagram illustrates working mechanism of mechanical arm and function of this arm to alternate the human arm.

Overall, The computer used to control the motors placed in different parts of arm. This arm is totally movable and it can be use as replacement of human arm for different type of works such as drills, paints, welding etc.

Firstly, The main purpose for control motors by The computer is to give accurate movement and precision control to the arm. The base is usually remain stable but for some occasion it can be movable. On the base, there is a shoulder which help to upward and downward movement of arm and a pivot is assembled with this to enable the rotation for arm.

On the next part of arm, there is a elbow with coordination of computerized controled motor which provides flexibilities to give perfect movement. This is connected with the wrist who allows gripper to flex or rotate the arm. At the end of the arm, a gripper with built in sensor and motor in manner to control force which work effectively and replace to manpower.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You identify the diagram’s main subject and give a general overview of computer-controlled motors, the arm’s movement, and possible work such as drilling, painting, and welding. You also report several relevant functions: the base may be movable, the shoulder raises and lowers the arm, the pivot enables rotation, and the wrist and gripper provide movement and force control. However, some features are less fully or accurately explained. The diagram shows alternative end-effectors for these tasks, rather than the gripper simply replacing a human arm, and the response does not clearly describe the three motors’ separate connections to the arm components. Develop the overview around the arm’s controlled joints and interchangeable tools, then report the components in a clearer sequence.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, and a description that moves from the base towards the gripper. This gives the reader a broadly logical route through the diagram. The sequencing is not always easy to follow, however. For example, the pivot and shoulder are introduced together, but their relationship is unclear, and the transition to the elbow does not explain how the arm sections connect. Some linking phrases, such as “On the next part of arm” and “At the end of the arm,” are useful but rather mechanical. Use clearer spatial references and connect each component to the next, while keeping the overview separate from the detailed description. This would make the progression more precise and reduce ambiguity in references such as “this.”

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “precision control,” “pivot,” “gripper,” “built in sensor,” and “flex or rotate.” These terms show familiarity with the diagram, and the examples of drilling, painting, and welding help convey the tools’ possible uses. Some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or imprecise, such as “alternate the human arm,” “perfect movement,” and “replace to manpower.” “Flexibilities” is also less natural than the relevant noun “flexibility.” Aim for standard technical phrasing and distinguish the arm’s components from the tasks performed by alternative end-effectors. More precise choices would make the description clearer without requiring a much broader vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more extended sentence forms, including clauses describing what the shoulder, pivot, wrist, and gripper do. However, errors in articles, agreement, verb forms, and sentence construction occur across the response. Examples include “a elbow,” “the base is usually remain stable,” and “a gripper with built in sensor and motor … which work effectively,” where the grammatical relationships are difficult to follow. Capitalisation after commas is also inconsistent, as in “Overall, The computer.” These errors sometimes make the component descriptions unclear, although the general meaning is usually recoverable. Practise building accurate sentences with a clear subject and verb, and check articles and singular/plural agreement, especially in longer descriptions.
