IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how a mechanical arm works, and how the joints that make up the arm function in the same way as those in a human arm. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The rendered diagram illustrates the process of mechanical arm work, and how it's joint works same as human arm.

Overall, a detaile description displayed such as three motors that worked on different places and also demonstrates its applications.

Having a detailed look at the graph, it is crystal clear that mechanical arm works with the collaboration of computer. For this, three motors installed on various places. For instance, a motor is used in gripper that is built-in sensors control force. Following this, a rotating wrist allows gripper to flex, another crucial motor is installed on elbow that allows movement and gives flexibility, furthermore this motor also linked with computer for precision control of motor.

On scrutinizing, it can be seen that another significant motor also installed on the shoulder of mechanical arm for raise or lowers movement of the arm. In addition, a pivot provides rotation to arm and also a base used for occasionally movement. Mechanical arm has multiple applications like, utilization in spary paint, drill holes and for welding metal.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You identify the diagram’s main components and functions, including the computer’s motor control, the elbow’s flexibility, the wrist’s movement, the gripper’s sensors, and the alternative uses for spraying, drilling and welding. This gives a relevant account of both the arm and its applications. However, some details are unclear or inaccurate: the motors are shown above the arm and connected to different parts, rather than being installed in the gripper, elbow and shoulder themselves. The base is described as occasionally movable, whereas it is usually stationary and only occasionally movable. The overview also says little about how the arm is arranged from the base and pivot up to the gripper. A clearer summary of that overall structure, with more precise descriptions of the motor connections, would make the key features more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, and two paragraphs describing components and applications. This helps the reader follow the general subject, and linking expressions such as “For instance,” “Following this,” and “In addition” show an effort to connect details. However, the progression is sometimes mechanical, and the sequence does not consistently follow the diagram’s layout. For example, the description moves from the gripper to the wrist and then back to the elbow, while the arm’s base-to-gripper arrangement could provide a clearer order. Some references are also difficult to track, particularly “this motor” after several motors have been mentioned. Grouping the components in diagram order and using clearer references would improve cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use a reasonable range of task-related vocabulary, including “precision control,” “built-in sensors,” “flexibility,” “pivot,” and “applications.” These terms help convey the diagram’s technical content, and the meaning is generally understandable. Some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, however: “process of mechanical arm work,” “installed on various places,” and “provides rotation to arm” do not sound natural in this context. There are also spelling errors, such as “detaile” and “spary,” and “graph” is not the appropriate term for a diagram. Aim for precise, natural phrases such as “the arm’s operation,” “connected to different parts,” and “allows the arm to rotate.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including clauses introduced by “that” and “which,” and the overall meaning can usually be understood. However, some grammatical errors recur in articles, agreement, verb forms and sentence construction. For example, “how it’s joint works same as human arm” needs possessive “its,” an article, and a more complete comparison; “three motors installed” is missing a finite verb; and “for raise or lowers movement” has an incorrect verb pattern. The sentence beginning “For instance” also makes the relationship between the motor and gripper unclear. Practise complete clauses, consistent present-tense descriptions, and patterns such as “allows the arm to rotate” or “is connected to the computer.”
