IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how a mechanical arm works, and how the joints that make up the arm function in the same way as those in a human arm. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The diagram below illustrates the functioning of a artificial arm and how different joints are put together to function like a real human arm.
Overall, it is clear that there are three principle motars attached at different points. There are three alternative effectors which are used for painting, drilling and welding purposes.
To specify, a more clear examination depicts that the three motars attached to different parts of the mechanical arm are controlled by the computer. One motar is attached near the gripper which has built in sensors to control or grip anything and the second motar is at the elbow joint which assists in flexibility and movement lastly the third motar is at the shoulder joint which helps in raising and lowering the arm. The base is normally stationary and occassionally moveable. There is a pivot joint right next to the shoulder joint, this pivot point helps the arm to rotate. The wrist assists the gripper in rotating or gripping. The three alternative end effectors are used for spraying, drilling and for welding.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You identify the diagram’s main subject and report several relevant features: computer control, three motors, the arm’s joints, the base, and the alternative uses for spraying, drilling and welding. The overview also highlights the three motors and end-effectors, giving the reader a useful summary. However, some details are incomplete or imprecise. The diagram links the motors to the elbow, the arm section near the wrist, and the gripper; your account instead places one at the shoulder and does not clearly describe the motor connected to the arm section. The wrist is described as helping with “gripping,” whereas its stated function is to let the gripper flex or rotate. Develop these points more accurately and distinguish the joints’ functions to cover the information more fully.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a coherent overall arrangement: an introduction and overview are followed by a paragraph describing the components and their functions. This makes the information reasonably easy to follow. Some linking is mechanical, however, particularly in “lastly” and the repeated use of “and,” while the long sentence beginning “One motor is attached near the gripper” combines several separate features without clear punctuation or transitions. The phrase “To specify” does not signal the next point naturally. Grouping the description by the control system, the arm’s joints, and the end-effectors would create clearer progression. Use a small range of precise links, and separate the motor descriptions into distinct sentences so relationships between components are easier to track.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant task vocabulary, including “gripper,” “pivot joint,” “alternative end effectors,” and “stationary,” which helps convey the diagram’s subject. Some word choices and collocations are imprecise or repetitive: “functioning of a artificial arm” is awkward, “motors attached at different points” is less exact than describing their connections, and “grip anything” is informal and broader than the diagram’s description of force control. There are also spelling errors in “motars” and “occassionally,” and “principle” is not the intended word in “three principle motors.” Aim for accurate technical terms and more natural phrasing, such as “three motors” and “control the gripping force.” This would improve precision while retaining your relevant vocabulary.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, and the overall meaning is generally clear. Some grammatical errors remain. The opening has an article error in “a artificial arm”; it should be “an artificial arm.” In “the base is normally stationary and occasionally moveable,” the adjective should be “movable,” and the sentence would be clearer with a parallel construction such as “is usually stationary but can occasionally be moved.” The sentence beginning “One motor is attached near the gripper” runs several clauses together, with “lastly” lacking suitable punctuation or a clear conjunction. There is also an unclear construction in “the wrist assists the gripper in rotating or gripping.” Use full stops to separate component functions and check articles, clause boundaries, and parallel phrasing.
