IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how a mechanical arm works, and how the joints that make up the arm function in the same way as those in a human arm. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
The diagram illustrates working of a machanical arm and how the joints who enables mechanical arm to function like human arm.
Overall, the mechanical arm operates with three main motors which are fitted at three major joints shoulder, elbow, and gripper. All the three motors are contolled by a computer. These motors helps mechanical arm to rotate freely and behave like huaman arm.
The mechanical arm is bolted onto a base which can be moved occasionally. The shoulder allows the arm to move up and down. The pivot next to the shoulder enables arm to rotate 360 degree. A long metal rod connects should to elbow, which allows arm to be more flexible. The wrist is attached to the elbow and a gripper is then fitted on the wrist. The gripper allows arm to hold various tools to perform human like functions.
All the joints are precisly controlled by a computer. This

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You identify the diagram’s subject and report several relevant features, including computer control, the base, shoulder movement, pivot rotation, elbow flexibility and the wrist–gripper arrangement. However, the account is only partial and some details are inaccurate or unsupported: the three motors are not shown as being fitted specifically at the shoulder, elbow and gripper, and the diagram does not state that the pivot rotates 360 degrees or that the gripper holds tools. The overview also misses the alternative end-effectors and their uses, as well as the wrist’s ability to flex or rotate. To develop the response, give a more accurate overview of the arm’s components and explain the interchangeable spray, drilling and welding attachments.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
The response has a basic paragraph structure: an introduction, an overview and a description of the arm’s parts. This gives the reader some organisation, and the sequence from the base and shoulder towards the gripper is generally understandable. However, progression is weakened by repetition, particularly the repeated point that the computer controls the motors, and by the abrupt ending, “All the joints are precisly controlled by a computer. This”. The final fragment leaves an idea unfinished. Connections between components could also be clearer; for example, explain how the shoulder, upper arm, elbow, wrist and gripper relate in sequence. Use linking language selectively and ensure each paragraph develops a complete part of the diagram.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use relevant topic vocabulary such as “motors”, “pivot”, “shoulder”, “wrist” and “gripper”, so the main components are identifiable. However, the range is limited and some wording is imprecise or repetitive, including “behave like human arm” and “perform human like functions”. Several spelling errors—“machanical”, “contolled”, “huaman” and “precisly”—are noticeable and reduce accuracy. Some collocations also need refinement: “bolted onto a base” is more specific than the diagram supports, while “a long metal rod” is an informal description of the arm section. Aim for precise process vocabulary, such as “is mounted on”, “is connected to” and “interchangeable end-effectors”, and check spelling carefully.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You communicate several basic relationships using simple sentences and some relative clauses, as in “The shoulder allows the arm to move up and down” and “The pivot next to the shoulder enables arm to rotate”. However, grammatical errors occur frequently. Articles are missing in phrases such as “working of a mechanical arm” and “enables arm to rotate”; subject–verb agreement is incorrect in “These motors helps”; and the relative clause in the opening, “joints who enables”, is faulty. The sentence “The wrist is attached to the elbow and a gripper is then fitted on the wrist” also needs more accurate grammatical and diagrammatic phrasing. The final “This” is an incomplete sentence. Practise accurate articles, agreement and relative clauses, and proofread every sentence for completion.
