IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how a mechanical arm works, and how the joints that make up the arm function in the same way as those in a human arm. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The diagram illustrates the functioning of mecahnical arm with different end-effectors.

Overall, the mechical arm is controlled by computer and is used to perform variety of movements like gripping, welding, painting and drilling using different joints.

The whole system is precisely controlled by computer which links to mechical arm through motors connecting at shoulder, elbow and wrist. The mechanical arm consists of a stand with pivot which enables arm to rotate while the shoulder is attached to pivot and it allows up and down movements consequently raising and lowering the arm. Arm in-turn is attched to elbow. The elbow gives flexibility of the movements to mecahnical arm and is attached to the gripper by wrist. The wrist can flex and rotate the gripper or other alternatives attached to it. The end-effectors contain built-in sensors used to control force. Mechanical arm can perform range of functions like gripping, spraying paints, drilling holes and welding metals according to type of end-effector attached to it.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You identify the diagram’s main purpose and cover the key components: computer control, the base and pivot, shoulder and elbow movement, the wrist, and the gripper’s sensors. You also report the alternative uses—painting, drilling and welding—so the response addresses the main parts of the task. The overview that the arm performs different movements is relevant, and several functions are accurately described. However, the account is not fully precise: it says the motors connect at the shoulder, elbow and wrist, whereas the diagram shows three motors linked to different parts, including the gripper. It also blurs the distinction between the gripper and alternative end-effectors. More exact reporting of these relationships and a clearer comparison between the arm’s joints and human joints would complete the overview.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall sequence: it introduces the system, gives a general overview, then describes the base and joints before listing possible end-effector uses. This makes the information reasonably easy to follow. However, the body is presented as one long paragraph, and several ideas are joined in a way that feels mechanical, particularly the repeated use of “which” and “and.” The progression from the computer to the arm’s components is understandable, but the relationship between the motors and the parts they control is not clearly organised. Use separate paragraphs for the overview and component details, and guide the reader through the arm in a consistent order from base to gripper. More precise referencing would also help clarify what “it” refers to.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant technical vocabulary, including “pivot,” “flexibility,” “end-effectors,” “built-in sensors,” and “rotate,” which helps convey the diagram’s functions. There is also some variety in describing movement and applications. However, spelling errors such as “mecahnical,” “mechical,” and “attched” are noticeable, and some expressions are imprecise or awkward, including “perform variety of movements” and “spraying paints.” “The end-effectors contain built-in sensors” also overgeneralises a feature that the diagram assigns specifically to the gripper. Aim for accurate collocations and consistent terminology: distinguish the gripper from alternative tools, and use natural phrases such as “a range of tasks” and “spray paint.” Proofreading technical terms would improve clarity and control.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including relative clauses such as “which enables arm to rotate” and “which allows the gripper…to flex and rotate.” Most relationships remain understandable, and the errors do not generally prevent the reader from following the description. Some grammatical inaccuracies persist, however: articles are missing in “functioning of mechanical arm,” “perform variety,” and “attached to pivot”; “Arm in-turn is attached” also needs an article and clearer sentence construction. The sentence beginning “The whole system is precisely controlled…” is long and combines several relationships, making it harder to track the subject. Check articles and singular/plural forms, and divide long sentences where several components and functions are being explained.
