IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how a mechanical arm works, and how the joints that make up the arm function in the same way as those in a human arm. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

the diagram illustrates the working method of mechanical arm and joints that make up the movement of arm similar to human arm.

overall, it is evident that three motor are required to function of mechanical arm. While computer precision control the motors. Base is mandatory to make arm stable and movable. Strikingly, elbow gives flexibility to mechanical arm.

In detail, there are three motors which is inculde in different sections of arm and computer control the motors. Then base is necessary to make the mechanical arm movable and stable, pivot enables arm to rotate in every direction. Further more, shoulder helps arm to raise and lower itand one motor is also allingedin it.

Looking further, another motor is required in elbow and the wrist of the mechanical arm allows grippers for flex and rotation. the human arm like structure is located on the top called gripper and the built in sensors including motor also control the force and help to hold different things.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You identify several relevant features, including the computer-controlled motors, the base, pivot, shoulder, elbow, wrist and gripper, and you give a basic overview that the arm uses three motors. However, the account is only partial: it does not clearly explain how the arm’s sections connect or how the motors operate the different joints. Some details are inaccurate or unclear, such as saying the base makes the arm “movable” and that the gripper is a “human arm like structure.” The diagram also shows alternative end-effectors for spraying paint, drilling and welding, which you omit. To develop the report, describe the arm’s layout from base to gripper and include the interchangeable tools as a key feature.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a basic paragraph structure, moving from an introduction and overview to details about the base and then the upper arm. This gives the reader some organisation. However, progression within the description is uneven: the account jumps from the motors to the base, then back to the elbow and wrist, rather than following the arm from its base upwards. Linking phrases such as “In detail” and “Looking further” are used, but they do not always clarify the relationship between points, and “Then” introduces a detail that is not a next stage in a process. Group related features and describe them in a consistent order, using clear references such as “the upper section” and “the end-effector.”

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use some relevant technical vocabulary, including “pivot,” “flexibility,” “sensors,” “rotate” and “force,” which helps convey the diagram’s subject. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate, making some descriptions difficult to interpret. For example, “working method” is less natural than “operation,” “make arm stable and movable” does not accurately describe the base, and “grippers for flex and rotation” is unclear. There are also spelling and word-form errors, including “inculde,” “allingedin” and “Further more.” Aim for precise terms and check spelling; for instance, describe the wrist as allowing the gripper to flex or rotate, and call the spray gun, drill and welding equipment alternative end-effectors.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including a contrast with “While” and a relative clause in “which is inculde in different sections.” However, control is inconsistent, and errors sometimes make relationships between ideas unclear. Examples include “three motor are required,” “computer precision control the motors,” and “the wrist … allows grippers for flex and rotation,” which show problems with agreement, articles and sentence construction. The sentence beginning “While computer precision control…” is also incomplete. Some punctuation and capitalisation are inconsistent, particularly at the start of sentences. Practise forming complete sentences with a clear subject and verb, and check singular/plural agreement and articles before submitting.
