IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how a mechanical arm works, and how the joints that make up the arm function in the same way as those in a human arm. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The provided diagram illustrates how a mechanical arm works just like a human limbs after connecting in a specific area of industries.

Overall, it is evident that the process is linear consists of total main three stages including joining, controling and working. It commences with the controlling and terminates with a movable machine, while further connecting process also includes.

At the beginning of the process, computer controls the three motors of that mechanical arm, which have a different roles in thier own. The first motor directly joined in the lower part of machine shoulder, which raises or lowers arm. In addition, pivot also consist in that area that enables to rotate arm. Similarly, second motor moves elbow of the machine, and that elbow provides a great movement and flexibility.

On the other hand, last one motor used in gripper that is constructed with the sensor control. Apart from the control and working of machine, there is extral construction phase. In this phase, worker uses different kind of tools and protection to join and for sefety.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

The response identifies the computer and three motors as the starting point and mentions the shoulder, pivot, elbow and gripper, so it includes some relevant components. However, the account only partially describes how the arm works and contains important inaccuracies: the first motor is not described as joining the lower shoulder, and the diagram does not show a separate construction phase involving workers, tools or safety equipment. Key features are also omitted, including the wrist’s ability to flex or rotate and the alternative end-effectors used for spraying, drilling and welding. The overview’s claim that the process has three stages is not supported by this diagram. Focus on accurately summarising the labelled parts and their functions, rather than adding an unshown process.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response has paragraph breaks and uses basic sequencing and contrast markers such as “At the beginning” and “On the other hand,” which gives it some organisation. However, the overall progression is difficult to follow: the overview introduces three stages that are not clearly explained, and the final paragraph shifts to an unsupported “construction phase.” Connections between components are also unclear, as in “the first motor directly joined in the lower part of machine shoulder.” Some linking phrases, including “Apart from the control and working of machine,” do not clearly show how the next point relates. Organise the description in the order shown, from computer and motors through the arm joints to the gripper and alternative tools, using clear references between parts.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The response uses some task-related vocabulary, including “motors,” “pivot,” “flexibility” and “sensor,” and attempts to describe functions. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations make the meaning unclear, such as “joining,” “extral construction phase” and “sensor control.” There are also noticeable spelling and word-form errors, including “controling,” “thier,” “extral” and “sefety.” These issues sometimes make it difficult to understand what the writer intends, particularly in the final paragraph. Build a more precise set of terms for describing diagram components and functions, and check spelling and collocations. For example, use “connected to” for a component’s link and “built-in sensors regulate the gripping force” for the gripper’s function.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response attempts both simple and more complex sentences, including “which raises or lowers arm” and “Apart from the control and working of machine, there is extral construction phase.” However, grammatical errors are frequent, and some sentences are difficult to interpret. Examples include “the process is linear consists of total main three stages,” which lacks a workable clause structure, and “the first motor directly joined,” which is missing an appropriate verb form. Articles and agreement are also problematic in “a different roles” and “the machine shoulder.” The final sentence, “worker uses different kind of tools and protection to join,” has unclear grammatical relationships. Practise complete clause structures, subject–verb agreement, articles and plural forms, then proofread each sentence for clarity.
