IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how a mechanical arm works, and how the joints that make up the arm function in the same way as those in a human arm. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The diagram below describes step by step process how a mechanical arm works, and how the arm work same as human arm with the help of joints that make arm.

Overall, All the process is controlled by computer and consists of three motors, a pivot, an elbow, a wrist, and a gripper.

Initially, three motors are connected to a computer who controls them correctly. A base that is usually motionless and occasionally transportable. Similarly, a pivot that helps arm to move back and forth. Moreover, First motor is connected to a shoulder which helps in raises arm and in lowers arm. The second motor is connected to an elbow which enables movement and provide flexibility to arm. Furthermore, a wrist that allows arm to grip and rotate. Third motor is connected to a gripper which is a integrated sensor that controls the intensity of force and allow arm to apply force.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

You identify the computer and several arm components, and your overview recognises that the system is computer-controlled. However, the response only partially covers the diagram: it omits the wrist’s role in allowing the gripper or alternative end-effector to flex or rotate, and it does not describe the alternative tools for spraying paint, drilling, or welding. Some connections and functions are also misreported: the first motor is linked to the elbow, not the shoulder, and the pivot enables rotation rather than movement “back and forth.” The comparison with a human arm is mentioned but not explained. The response is also 143 words, below the required 150. Include the missing features and accurately describe how the parts connect to develop a fuller summary.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a basic overall shape: an opening, a brief overview, and a sequence of details. Words such as “Initially,” “Moreover,” and “Furthermore” signal progression, so the reader can follow that you are describing components. However, the sequence does not consistently match the diagram, and several details are presented as fragments rather than connected sentences, for example, “A base that is usually motionless and occasionally transportable” and “Furthermore, a wrist…”. The linking words are also somewhat mechanical, and the paragraph does not clearly group the control system, arm joints, and end-effectors. Organise the description in a clearer order—from computer and motors, through the base and joints, to the gripper and alternatives—and connect each feature to its function.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant topic vocabulary, including “motors,” “pivot,” “shoulder,” “elbow,” “wrist,” and “gripper,” which makes the subject recognisable. There are also attempts to describe functions, such as “controls the intensity of force.” However, the range is limited and some choices are inaccurate or unnatural: “transportable” is not a natural description of a base that may be movable, “move back and forth” does not convey rotation, and “a integrated sensor” incorrectly describes the gripper as a sensor rather than saying it has built-in sensors. Repetition of “helps” and “allows” also limits precision. Use the diagram’s functional terms more accurately, such as “raises and lowers,” “rotates,” and “flexes,” and vary verbs when explaining what each component does.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more extended sentence forms, and the main topic is generally understandable. However, control is inconsistent, particularly in agreement, articles, and sentence construction. For example, “how the arm work” should use a singular verb, while “a integrated sensor” needs the correct article and does not form a clear description. “A base that is usually motionless and occasionally transportable” is a sentence fragment, and “which helps in raises arm and in lowers arm” has faulty verb patterns. Capitalisation after “Overall” and “Moreover” is also inconsistent. Practise complete sentences with a clear subject and verb, and use parallel forms such as “raises and lowers the arm.” More accurate clause construction would make the component descriptions easier to follow.
