IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how a mechanical arm works, and how the joints that make up the arm function in the same way as those in a human arm. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 4.5)

The given diagram demonstrate the a computer precision of motors how perform work and how the joints that make up the arm funcation in the same path as those in a human arm.

Overall, it is evident that the computer illustrates the different body parts and how it work with these instruments.

Computer is an electronic device and it has numerous funcations as well as different parts. Computer has 3 types of motors who works in different styles with different instruments. First motor is attached with shoulder or lower arm of computer, which is also called base. Similarly, the second one is attached with albow who allows movement and flexibility.

The third motor is fixed with gripper who perform built in sensor control force. While there are more instruments who joint with this machine. For instance, a wrist which allows gripper to flex or rotate. Last one is that pivote which perform enables arm to rotate. All of them are conected with computer and base.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

The response identifies several relevant components, including the motors, elbow, gripper, wrist, pivot and base, and it attempts an overall statement. However, the overview is vague and partly inaccurate: the computer controls the motors rather than “illustrat[ing] the different body parts.” Some relationships are also misreported. The first motor is not described as attached to the shoulder or base; the diagram links the left motor to the elbow, while the center motor connects to the arm near the wrist and the right motor to the gripper. The response omits the shoulder’s role in raising and lowering the arm and the alternative end-effectors. To improve, summarise the arm’s main structure and control, then accurately explain the key functions and comparisons shown.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

There is a basic attempt to organise the response, beginning with an introduction and an overall statement before listing components. Words such as “Overall,” “Similarly,” and “For instance” provide some signposting. However, the progression is difficult to follow because the parts are not presented in a clear physical or functional order, and the motor descriptions are mixed with joint descriptions. The final sentence, “All of them are conected with computer and base,” is unclear about what “them” refers to. Grouping the information into a paragraph about the computer and motors and another about the arm’s joints and end-effectors would make the sequence easier to understand. Use linking expressions only where they accurately show the relationship between ideas.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The response uses some task-related vocabulary, including “motors,” “gripper,” “wrist,” “pivot,” “flexibility,” and “rotate,” so the reader can recognise the subject. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate, such as “computer precision of motors,” “different styles,” and “instruments” for the arm’s components. Repetition of “computer” and “motor” also makes the description less precise. Spelling errors, including “funcation,” “albow,” “pivote,” and “conected,” are noticeable and reduce clarity. Aim to use the diagram’s labels accurately and choose specific terms such as “joint,” “component,” and “end-effector” where appropriate.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The response attempts both simple and longer sentences, including a sentence beginning “While there are more instruments…” and one using “which,” but control is inconsistent and the range remains limited. Errors occur in basic sentence patterns and agreement: “The given diagram demonstrate,” “how it work,” and “Computer has 3 types of motors who works” all contain faulty verb forms or agreement. Articles and sentence construction are also problematic in “the a computer precision of motors how perform work.” The sentence beginning “While” is a fragment, and “which perform enables arm to rotate” is not grammatically complete. Practise accurate subject–verb agreement and complete clauses first, then build longer sentences using relative clauses to explain each component’s function.
