IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how a mechanical arm works, and how the joints that make up the arm function in the same way as those in a human arm. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
The illustration shows that how a mechanical arm works, and how joint make up the arm function in the same way as those in a human arm.
The diagram illustrates the structure and operation of an indrustrial robot arm, and shows its main components , their functions, and the alternative endeffectors that can be attached to it. The robot arm is controlled by the computer processor.
To begin with, first computer is shown as control of motors. subsequently, motors take place, followed by elbow that alows movement and gives flexibilty and also followed by gripper that built-in sensors control force.
Moving on the remaining features, wrist is responsible for gripper or alternative end-effector to flex or rotate. Meanwhile the shoulder raise or lowers arm and pivot enables arm to rotate. finally, the base is usually stationary or occasionally movable. Alternative end-effoctors use for spray paint and drill holes and also used for weld metal.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You identify the diagram’s subject and include several relevant functions, such as the elbow providing flexibility, the wrist allowing flexion or rotation, and the base being usually stationary or occasionally movable. However, the response only partially summarises the visual: it lacks a clear overview of how the computer’s three motors control different parts, and the sequence “motors take place, followed by elbow” does not accurately explain the arm’s structure. The alternative end-effectors are mentioned, but their uses are not clearly linked to the interchangeable tools. The response is also below the required 150 words; 15 words copied from the prompt were excluded from the count. Add a concise overview and explain the main components and their relationships more fully.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
There is some paragraphing, and phrases such as “To begin with” and “Moving on” signal an attempt to organise the description. However, the progression is not consistently logical: the first body paragraph moves from the computer to the motors, elbow and gripper, while the next returns to the wrist, shoulder and pivot without clearly tracing the arm from its base upwards. Several links are mechanical or unclear, including “subsequently” and “Meanwhile,” and the final sentence combines the alternative tools and their uses without a clear relationship. Organise the response in a physical sequence—control system, base and joints, then end-effectors—and use linking phrases only where they clarify that sequence.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant technical vocabulary, including “motors,” “elbow,” “gripper,” “wrist,” “pivot” and “end-effector,” and some functional descriptions are appropriate to the diagram. However, the range is limited and several word-choice or spelling errors reduce precision: “indrustrial,” “alows,” “flexibilty” and “end-effoctors” are misspelled, while “motors take place” is not a natural way to describe their role. “Alternative end-effectors use for spray paint” is also imprecise. Aim for accurate technical collocations such as “the motors operate the joints” and “the tools can be used to spray paint, drill holes or weld metal.” Proofreading spelling would make the meaning easier to follow.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response attempts both simple and joined sentences, and the opening identifies the topic. However, grammatical control is inconsistent, with frequent errors in sentence structure, articles and agreement. For example, “shows that how” incorrectly combines two structures, “how joint make up” lacks a plural form and article, and “the shoulder raise or lowers arm” has an agreement error and an omitted article. The fragment-like construction “followed by gripper that built-in sensors control force” also makes the relationship between the gripper and its sensors difficult to understand. Use complete sentences with a clear subject and verb, and check articles and singular/plural agreement. A wider range of accurate sentence patterns would improve clarity.
