IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how a mechanical arm works, and how the joints that make up the arm function in the same way as those in a human arm. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
The illustration depicts the works of a robotic arm along with the joints that create the arm function in the similar way of a human arm.
Overall, there are three motors in the robot arm to make it looks like human arm. The joints a human has in his arm to make it exact in robot arm, the motors are needed. This innovation is to replace the human who is holding drill in right side 3rd picture.
Computer is controlling motors and giving commands, therefore, it can work as human arm. Robot arm's elbow has two motors where one is going towards grip and another one is towards shoulder. The one going towards grip has joint middle of it. Before grip there is wrist which allows girip to be more flexible. Grip is having sensor and a motor.
In robotic arm, motors are mainly used for flexibility. Shoulder has the ability to raise or lower the arm by the command of computer.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You identify the diagram as a robotic arm and mention relevant features such as the computer, motors, elbow, wrist, gripper and shoulder. However, the account only partially reports the main information: the pivot and base are omitted, and the alternative end-effectors are not accurately summarised. The claim that the innovation is intended to replace a person holding a drill is an unsupported interpretation; the diagram shows spray painting, drilling and welding as possible tasks, not a specific replacement purpose. The overview also focuses on making the arm resemble a human arm rather than explaining its main arrangement and functions. To strengthen the response, give a clear overview of the arm’s components and explain how the joints and interchangeable tools contribute to its operation.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
The response has a basic paragraph structure, moving from an introduction and overview to component details, and it uses a few linking expressions such as “Overall,” “therefore” and “Before.” However, progression is not consistently clear: the overview repeats the idea that the arm resembles a human arm, while the later paragraphs jump between motors, the elbow, grip and shoulder without a clear sequence through the diagram. Some references are also difficult to follow, particularly “the one going towards grip” and “another one is towards shoulder.” Organise the description in the order the reader encounters the components, from computer and base through the joints to the end-effector, and use precise references to connect each part.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use some relevant topic vocabulary, including “motors,” “elbow,” “wrist,” “sensor” and “flexible,” so the reader can recognise several components. However, the range is limited and some word choices or collocations are inaccurate, which occasionally makes the meaning unclear. For example, “grip” is used where “gripper” or “end-effector” is intended, and “make it looks like human arm” does not express the intended comparison naturally. “The works of a robotic arm” is also an awkward phrase for describing the diagram. Aim for precise technical terms and natural combinations, such as “the arm’s operation,” “human-arm joints,” and “the gripper is fitted with sensors.” Check spelling, including “grip,” which appears as “girip.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including a relative clause in “which allows girip to be more flexible” and a cause-and-effect construction with “therefore.” However, errors are frequent, and some sentences require rereading. Examples include “the joints that create the arm function in the similar way of a human arm,” “to make it looks like human arm,” and “Computer is controlling motors.” These show problems with verb forms, articles and sentence construction. The sentence beginning “The joints a human has…” is also difficult to parse because its clauses are not connected clearly. Practise building accurate subject–verb patterns and use articles consistently; for example, “The computer controls the motors” and “The joints function in a way similar to those in a human arm.”
