IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how a mechanical arm works, and how the joints that make up the arm function in the same way as those in a human arm. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
The given process diagram illustrates how arm function work like as human arm by using mechanical arm with its joint.
Overall , There are main four steps in the process of mechanical arm works with its joint worked like as human arm from computer control to machine fixing. In mechanical arm process involved both hand and computer.
At the first step, Intructions proceed from the computer to run the motors which is connected with machine. First motor control the gripper which is built sensors control force. Second motor, execute the wrist allowed to flex or rotate. Like as second, Third motor also help to controlled to its shoulder by rising the lower arm.
At the last step, The machine arm have the base which is movable with the help of pivot which is enable to rotae the arm. As a result, the machine arm worked like as human arm .

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
You identify the diagram as a mechanical arm controlled by a computer and mention several relevant parts, including the motors, gripper, wrist, shoulder, base and pivot. However, the account only partially reports how the system works, and some key relationships are misread: the first motor is linked to the elbow, not the gripper, while the third motor is linked to the gripper, not the shoulder. The elbow’s role in movement and flexibility is omitted, as are the alternative end-effectors shown for spraying, drilling and welding. The overview also refers to “four steps” and “machine fixing,” which do not accurately summarise the diagram. A clearer overview and a more accurate account of the components and their functions would make the response more complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response has a basic sequence, moving from computer control to the arm’s components, and uses signposts such as “Overall,” “At the first step” and “At the last step.” These help the reader recognise an intended structure. However, the progression is not consistently logical: the motors are described in an order that conflicts with the diagram, and the final paragraph introduces the base and pivot without clearly connecting them to the arm’s operation. Some linking phrases, including “Like as second,” are unclear, while repeated references to “the machine arm” make the account feel repetitive. Organise the description by following the diagram from the computer and motors through the arm joints to the base, and use clearer links between each part.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use some relevant technical vocabulary, including “gripper,” “motors,” “wrist,” “pivot” and “flex or rotate,” which shows an attempt to describe the diagram specifically. The range is sufficient to communicate the general subject, but several phrases are imprecise or unnatural, such as “machine fixing,” “hand and computer” and “the machine arm process.” There are also spelling errors in “Intructions” and “rotae,” and word-choice problems in phrases such as “execute the wrist.” These sometimes make the intended meaning harder to follow. Aim for accurate collocations and use the diagram’s labels directly—for example, describe the computer as controlling the motors and the pivot as enabling rotation.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The response attempts a few longer structures, including “which is connected with machine” and “which is enable to rotae the arm,” but most sentences rely on simple patterns, and errors are frequent enough to affect clarity. Examples include “how arm function work,” “There are main four steps,” and “First motor control,” where agreement, articles and sentence construction are faulty. Verb forms are also inconsistent in “the machine arm worked like as human arm,” and the phrase “help to controlled” does not use the correct verb pattern. Capitalisation after commas is inconsistent as well. Practise building accurate simple sentences first, then combine them with relative clauses; check subject–verb agreement, articles and verb forms when proofreading.
