IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how a mechanical arm works, and how the joints that make up the arm function in the same way as those in a human arm. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
The diagram illustrate how a many structural arm works and how the attach that make up the arm function in the same way as those in a human arm.
Overview, the computer precision control of motors is basically attach and how to work and alternative end effectors like ( spray paint/drill holes/weld metal).
In details, the computer precision control of motors is divided in the 3 further motors in the middle one motor attached the elbow and its function allow the movement and gives flexibility and other one motor main feature moved on gripper and built in sensors control force. Further more, the grill machine work like arm structural. Actually, the arm holder wrist allows the gripper (or alternative and effector) to easily move and flexibility. Other, the hold one pivot enables easily rotate to arm.
As well as, the mechanical machine shoulder raises and down arm. Because, basically this machine usually stationary and occasionally movable. Its an electric machine it is basically use for spray paint, holes, and weld their metal things.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You identify several relevant components, including the computer, motors, elbow, gripper, wrist, pivot, shoulder and base, and mention the alternative uses shown in the diagram. However, the account only partially explains how these parts work together. The overview is unclear and does not summarise the arm’s main arrangement or its movement functions. Some details are inaccurate or difficult to interpret: the diagram shows three motors connected to different parts, but “divided in the 3 further motors” does not explain their roles clearly, and the base is described as a machine used for spraying, drilling and welding, although these are alternative end-effectors. The comparison with a human arm is also not developed. Focus on the main structure and explain each labelled function accurately.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
There is an attempt to organise the response into an opening, an overview and detail paragraphs, and the reader can identify a number of components in the order they are discussed. However, progression is difficult to follow because relationships between ideas are often unclear. For example, “Further more, the grill machine work like arm structural” does not connect clearly to the preceding description, while “As well as” and “Other” are used awkwardly to introduce new points. The overview also repeats information rather than giving a clear summary. Group the components in a logical sequence—from the computer and motors, through the arm joints, to the base and end-effectors—and use straightforward links such as “The arm also has…” or “At its end…”.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use some relevant technical vocabulary, including “motors,” “elbow,” “gripper,” “sensors,” “pivot” and “end-effectors,” which helps identify the diagram’s parts. However, the range is limited and several inaccurate or imprecise choices make meaning difficult to follow. “Many structural arm” and “grill machine” do not describe the mechanical arm clearly, while “arm holder wrist” is an unclear label for the wrist. There are also awkward combinations such as “divided in the 3 further motors” and “weld their metal things.” Aim to use the diagram’s exact labels and pair them with precise verbs: for example, say that the shoulder raises or lowers the arm and that the pivot allows it to rotate. This will make the description clearer and more appropriately technical.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The response attempts to use longer sentences and connectors, but sentence structures are often faulty, and errors frequently make relationships between parts unclear. For instance, “The diagram illustrate” has a subject–verb agreement error, and “the computer precision control of motors is divided in the 3 further motors” has an unclear grammatical structure and incorrect preposition. Articles and verb forms are also inconsistent, as in “the arm holder wrist allows” and “it is basically use.” Several sentence fragments or poorly joined clauses appear, including “Because, basically this machine usually stationary and occasionally movable.” Use complete sentences with a clear subject and verb, and check agreement, articles and verb forms. Shorter, accurate sentences would help communicate the functions before you attempt more complex structures.
