IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how a mechanical arm works, and how the joints that make up the arm function in the same way as those in a human arm. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 4.5)

The diagram depecits that mechanical arm works easier for human arm by different ways.

It is clearly seen, that computer precision has control of 3 motors which are interconnected firstly, motor connect elbow of mechanical part to check flexability then the wrist of mechanical part allow which also denote as grip in 3 motor in base part of machine is shoulder .

On the other hand basically this mechanical machine used by human workers like spray paints , drill holes , weld metal by sitting in this mechanical parts .

overall it is evident that control of computer rather working with tools are much difficult by human to drill holes , spray paint by help of mechanical parts of this motor .

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0

You identify the computer and its three motors, mention the elbow and wrist, and include the alternative uses shown—spray painting, drilling and welding. However, the description is only a minimal account of the diagram: several key features are omitted, including the base, pivot, shoulder’s raising and lowering function, and the gripper’s force sensors. Some relationships are also unclear or inaccurate; for example, the wrist is not the grip, and the diagram does not show workers sitting in the machine. The response is 122 words, below the required 150, which further limits the detail available. To improve, give a clear overview of how the arm is controlled and moves, then describe its main joints and end-effectors accurately.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

There is a basic attempt to organise the response, with an opening statement, a description of the motors and joints, and a final comment introduced by “overall.” You also use “On the other hand” to signal a shift to the alternative tools. However, the ideas do not progress clearly: the second paragraph combines the motors, elbow, wrist, grip and base in one difficult-to-follow sentence, while the final paragraph repeats points about drilling and spray painting rather than summarising the diagram. Some linking phrases do not express the relationship between ideas accurately. Use separate sentences or paragraphs for the control system, the arm’s joints, and its alternative end-effectors, and connect each feature in the order shown.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some relevant task vocabulary, including “mechanical arm,” “motors,” “elbow,” “wrist,” “spray paints,” “drill holes” and “weld metal,” so the reader can recognise the general subject. However, the range is limited and several choices or forms are inaccurate, which sometimes makes the meaning difficult to follow. For instance, “grip” is used where “gripper” is needed, and “computer precision” does not clearly express the computer’s precision control of the motors. There are also spelling errors such as “depecits” and “flexability.” Build a more precise set of terms for the diagram’s parts and functions, and check spelling and collocations before submitting.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The response attempts to combine ideas using clauses, as in “which also denote as grip,” and includes a few simple statements. However, sentence structures are very limited and many sentences contain errors that obscure the relationships between parts. For example, “computer precision has control of 3 motors which are interconnected firstly” has an unclear subject and clause structure, while “the wrist of mechanical part allow” has problems with articles and subject–verb agreement. The opening also lacks a clear article and uses an awkward comparison structure. Aim first for accurate simple sentences, such as “The computer controls three motors,” then add controlled clauses to explain each joint’s function. Check articles, verb agreement, and punctuation when joining clauses.
