Student answer (Band 5.0)

The diagram demostrates how a mechanical arm works, and how the joints that make up the arm function in the same way as those in a human arm.

Overall, this is an arm type instrument which contain three motors which is control by computer. Some key features are elbow and base which move to direction it and it also have a gripper which is used to hold some thing like a hand.

To begin with its origenal working and stucture that it is an instrument which is laying on the base which is connected to the shoulder which moves the lower arm and the lower arm joins with elbow which allows to move and gives flexiblity and the other end of elblows rode is connected with gripper with include built in sensor control.

All the structure contain three motor with are main part of this instrument which is connect at different places such as first motor is attached in shoulder to move the shoulder and second is connected with elbow and the third is connected with gripper. All the motors are control by computer. All this make this instrument able to work as a human hand.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You identify the diagram as a computer-controlled mechanical arm and mention the elbow, base, gripper and motors, so the response is relevant to the task. However, the account only partially reports the main features and includes inaccuracies: the shoulder raises and lowers the arm, while the base is not described as moving the arm in a direction; the pivot, wrist and alternative end-effectors are omitted. The overview that it works “as a human hand” is broad and does not clearly summarise how the components function. The motor connections are also misreported: the diagram links motors to the elbow, arm section near the wrist, and gripper, rather than specifically to the shoulder, elbow and gripper. A clearer overview and accurate coverage of the key joints and their functions would strengthen the report.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response has a basic structure, with an opening, an overview and two paragraphs describing the arm and its motors. Sequencing phrases such as “To begin with” and “All the motors” help signal movement between points. However, the progression is not consistently clear: the second paragraph combines the base, shoulder, lower arm, elbow and gripper in a difficult-to-follow sentence, and the final paragraph repeats the motor information already introduced in the overview. References such as “it,” “this instrument” and “the other end” are sometimes unclear. Organise the description in the order of the arm’s components, from base and pivot through shoulder and elbow to wrist and gripper, and use linking words only where they clarify relationships.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some relevant topic vocabulary, including “motors,” “shoulder,” “elbow,” “gripper” and “built in sensor,” which helps identify parts of the diagram. However, the range is limited and several word choices or spelling errors make the description less precise, such as “arm type instrument,” “move to direction it,” and “elblows rode.” Some phrases are also unnatural, including “original working and structure” and “hold some thing like a hand.” Aim for accurate technical terms and natural collocations, for example, “mechanical arm,” “rotate,” “flex,” and “control the force applied by the gripper.” Proofreading spelling and choosing precise verbs will make the information easier to understand.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple statements and longer sentences, but the longer structures are often faulty, and errors occur frequently enough to make some relationships difficult to follow. For example, “which contain three motors which is control by computer” has problems with subject–verb agreement and passive construction; “All the structure contain three motor” also has agreement and plural errors. Articles and sentence structure are inconsistent, as in “connected to the shoulder which moves the lower arm.” Use shorter, controlled sentences to describe each component, and check agreement, articles and passive forms—for example, “The arm is controlled by a computer” and “The shoulder raises and lowers the arm.” This would improve clarity while allowing you to build more accurate complex sentences.
