IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how a mechanical arm works, and how the joints that make up the arm function in the same way as those in a human arm. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The process diagram shows the mechanism of machine which function several mechanical process especially holding of some object.

Overall, this diagrams shows the complete process of any artificial arm machine which works to do drill holes, weld metal and spray paint. It is control through computer which gives command to different moters responsible for different functions.

Initially, computer device is used to control the motor precisely. It transmits messege to the motors. Each motor has their own way to function. The mechanical arm consists of few important parts like gripper which is responsible for holding an object. A wrist which helps the gripper to rotate. An elbow which gives flexibilty to the arm. A shoulder which adjusts the height of the arm. A pivort which helps the arm to rotate and lastly a base is present at the end which is mostly static but some time it can be movable.

Now lets explain how it works. First the computer transmits commands to the 3 different motors, each responsible for different mechanisim. The first moter controls the relation between base and shoulder. It helps the shoulder to raise and lower the arm. The second moter controls the elbow and moves the arm in a flexible manner. The third motor commands the gripper to hold any object.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You identify the main subject and give an overview of computer control, the arm’s components, and its possible uses, including drilling, welding and spray painting. You also describe several functions shown in the diagram, such as the wrist rotating the gripper and the base being usually stationary. However, the account of how the motors connect to and operate the parts is not consistently accurate: the diagram links motors to the elbow, the arm section near the wrist, and the gripper, whereas you assign the first motor to the base and shoulder and the second to the elbow. The wrist’s flexing/rotating function and the alternative end-effectors could also be integrated more clearly. Select the key relationships and report them precisely rather than adding unsupported operating details.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, a description of the components, and a final paragraph about operation. This gives the reader a basic route through the information. However, progression is weakened by repetition: the computer and motors are introduced in the overview, explained again in the third paragraph, and then revisited in the final paragraph. The list of components also interrupts the explanation of how the arm works, while “Now lets explain how it works” is an informal transition. Group the information into a concise overview followed by a logically ordered account of the control system and arm parts. Use references such as “these joints” only when their antecedent is clear, and avoid repeating the same point.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant task vocabulary, including “mechanical arm,” “gripper,” “wrist,” “elbow,” “shoulder,” “pivot,” and “motors,” so the reader can follow the general subject. Some descriptions also convey function, for example, “gives flexibility” and “raise and lower the arm.” However, the range is limited and several choices are imprecise or unnatural, such as “holding of some object,” “different mechanisim,” and “controls the relation between base and shoulder.” Spelling errors, including “messege,” “moters,” “flexibilty,” and “pivort,” are noticeable. Use precise process language and check spelling; for example, describe a motor as “operating” or “driving” a joint rather than controlling a “relation.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more extended sentence forms, including “It is control through computer which gives command to different moters” and the sequence beginning “First the computer transmits commands.” The main meaning is generally recoverable, but errors in sentence construction and grammatical forms recur. Examples include “the mechanism of machine,” “this diagrams shows,” “Each motor has their own way,” and “It is control through computer,” which need articles, agreement, or passive forms. The component list also contains sentence fragments, such as “A wrist which helps the gripper to rotate.” Aim to make each item a complete sentence and check subject–verb agreement, articles, and verb forms. More accurate control of these patterns would make the explanation easier to read.
