IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how a mechanical arm works, and how the joints that make up the arm function in the same way as those in a human arm. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The diagram illustrates the functioning of mechanical arm aligned with the human arm.
Overall, it shows that it have three motors with different functions, which are controlled precisely by a computer. Therefore, it works like a normal human arm.
First of all, the first motor works as a shoulder joint with a pivot established in it, whose function is mirrored by a ball and socket joint of shoulder that helps arm to move in different directions. The shoulder is fixed on a base that can be stationary or sometimes moveable.
Moreover, the other motor functions as an elbow joint which allows movement and flexability to the arm. Moving forward, before the gripper, there is a wrist as a human hand , which allows gripper to flex or rotate.
At last, the motor provided for gripper provides power to gripper, while, it have the built-in sensors to control force and to have a grip on multiple equipments. The end effectors of mechanical arm are spray paint, drill holes and welding metals.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You identify the main components and give an overview that the computer controls three motors and that the arm resembles a human arm. You also report the base, elbow, wrist, gripper sensors and alternative end-effectors, so the response addresses the diagram’s main subject. However, some functions and comparisons are unclear or inaccurate: the first motor is not described as the shoulder joint, and the diagram distinguishes the pivot, which enables rotation, from the shoulder, which raises and lowers the arm. The human-arm comparison is asserted but not developed beyond the shoulder. The end-effectors are listed, but their uses—spraying paint, drilling holes and welding metal—could be stated more clearly. More precise coverage of these relationships would make the summary more complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction and overview are followed by details about the shoulder and base, the elbow and wrist, and finally the gripper and end-effectors. Sequencing phrases such as “First of all,” “Moreover,” and “At last” help signal movement through the description. However, some links are mechanical, and the progression does not consistently follow the diagram’s structure: the shoulder and pivot are combined with the first motor, while the computer’s control of the three motors is not connected to the later component descriptions. References such as “it” in “it have three motors” and “whose function” are not always clear. Grouping the control system, arm joints and end-effectors more explicitly would improve cohesion.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “pivot,” “built-in sensors,” “flex or rotate,” and “end effectors,” which helps communicate the diagram’s technical content. There are also attempts at more specific phrasing, such as “ball and socket joint.” Some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or imprecise, however: “functioning of mechanical arm aligned with the human arm” is awkward, and “have a grip on multiple equipments” does not express the diagram’s point clearly. “Flexability” is misspelled, and “welding metals” is less natural than describing the function as welding metal. Choose precise verbs for each component and check spelling and countability to make the vocabulary more controlled.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mixture of simple and complex structures, including a relative clause in “whose function is mirrored by a ball and socket joint” and a time-sequencing clause beginning “before the gripper.” These attempts show some range, and the main meaning is generally understandable. Some grammatical errors remain, particularly with agreement, articles and sentence construction. For example, “it have three motors” should be “it has three motors,” and “while, it have the built-in sensors” has both an unnecessary comma and incorrect agreement. Phrases such as “functioning of mechanical arm” and “as a human hand” also need articles. Review subject–verb agreement and article use, and punctuate clauses more carefully to improve accuracy.
