IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how a mechanical arm works, and how the joints that make up the arm function in the same way as those in a human arm. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 4.0)
The diagram illustrates how the movement of the machinery arm help the machine to move same as the joint of the human body .
Overall, the main joint provide the strong support and the energy in the object help to move on that base which is being controlled by the control system.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.0
The response makes a brief attempt to describe the diagram and offers an overview, but it does not report the main features shown. The statement that the arm moves “same as the joint of the human body” is relevant to the comparison, while “the main joint provide the strong support” and “energy in the object” do not accurately explain the labelled functions. Important details are omitted, including the computer’s control of the motors, the roles of the shoulder, elbow, wrist and gripper, and the alternative end-effectors. The response is also 99 words below the required minimum, leaving too little information to summarise the diagram. To improve, describe the arm’s components and functions, then compare these with human joints where relevant.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
There is a basic attempt to organise the response: the first sentence introduces the diagram, and “Overall” signals a summary. This gives the reader a simple starting point. However, the response consists of only two sentences, and the ideas do not develop in a clear sequence from the base and joints to the arm’s end or its uses. The relationship between “strong support,” “energy,” and the control system is also unclear, so the overview does not connect the parts into a coherent account. Use separate paragraphs for an overview and the main details, and order those details according to the diagram. Linking phrases such as “At the base,” “Above this,” and “At the end of the arm” would help guide the reader.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The response uses a few relevant terms, including “machinery arm,” “joint,” “base,” and “control system,” showing some awareness of the topic. However, the vocabulary is very limited for describing this diagram, and several phrases are imprecise or unnatural, such as “the energy in the object” and “the main joint provide the strong support.” The response does not use the specific labels that would make the summary precise, such as “motor,” “shoulder,” “wrist,” “gripper,” or “pivot.” Build a small bank of diagram vocabulary and use the labels accurately, with verbs such as “raises,” “rotates,” and “controls” to explain each component’s function.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The response attempts two complete sentences and uses “Overall” to introduce a summary, but the grammatical range is narrow and errors occur in both sentences. In “the movement of the machinery arm help,” the singular subject requires “helps.” The phrase “move same as the joint” needs an article and a clearer comparison, for example, “move in a similar way to the joints in a human arm.” In the second sentence, “the main joint provide” has a subject–verb agreement error, and “the energy … help” also needs agreement. There are punctuation and spacing problems after “Overall,” and the final sentence contains several ideas joined without clear grammatical relationships. Practise accurate simple sentences before adding longer explanations.
