IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how a mechanical arm works, and how the joints that make up the arm function in the same way as those in a human arm. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The diagram shows how the mechanical arm works and also the functionality of the joints that make up the arm.

Overall, the mechanical arm consists of three motors and almost 6 different types of components that helps the arm work in a desired way for specific purpose.

Intially, a shoulder which can be raised up and down with the help of an electric motor is built on a stationary but movable base. The shoulder is also connected to a pivot which enables the shoulder to rotate horizontally. On the shoulder there rests an elbow that uses a motor so that the arm becomes flexible. In the last part, a wrist connects the elbow with main component which is gripper. The gripper has built in sensors to control the force while holding things and this component also has a motor.

All the motors used in the arm are programmed and can be controlled with computer.

Summing up, these mechanical arms are used for different purposes such as painting, welding, drilling, etc.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You identify the diagram’s main subject and give a broad overview of the arm’s components and uses. Relevant details include the shoulder’s up-and-down movement, the pivot’s rotation, the elbow’s flexibility, and the gripper’s force sensors. However, some features are reported less fully or imprecisely: the base is described as “stationary but movable,” whereas it is usually stationary and only occasionally movable, and the wrist’s ability to let the gripper flex or rotate is not explained. The computer’s precision control of the motors is mentioned only briefly, and the alternative end-effectors could be described more clearly. A more complete account of how the parts connect and what each joint enables would make the summary more fully developed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall sequence: an introduction, an overview, a description moving from the base and shoulder towards the gripper, and a concluding reference to applications. This makes the information generally easy to follow. The progression is not always fully precise, however: “On the shoulder there rests an elbow” is an awkward transition, and “In the last part” does not clearly identify the wrist-to-gripper connection. The final sentence about uses feels somewhat separate from the preceding description rather than integrated into the overview. To strengthen the organisation, group the explanation into a paragraph on the arm’s structure and movement and another on its control and interchangeable tools, using clear references between components.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use a relevant range of topic vocabulary, including “pivot,” “gripper,” “built in sensors,” “rotate,” and “flexible,” which helps convey the diagram’s functions. Some choices are imprecise or unnatural for a technical description: “functionality of the joints” is less direct than describing their functions, and “almost 6 different types of components” is vague. There are also spelling and form issues, such as “Intially,” “specific purpose,” and “drilling, etc.” These do not prevent understanding, but they limit the precision and control expected in a stronger description. Prefer exact labels from the diagram and concise technical collocations, and check spelling and spacing around punctuation.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including relative clauses such as “which enables the shoulder to rotate horizontally” and “that uses a motor.” Most of the sequence remains understandable, but some grammatical errors reduce accuracy. For example, “components that helps” has a subject–verb agreement error, while “with computer” needs an article or plural form. The sentence “a shoulder … is built on a stationary but movable base” also creates an unclear relationship between the parts. Review agreement, articles, and sentence construction, especially when describing how one component connects to another. More consistently accurate complex sentences would make the technical explanation clearer.
