IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how a mechanical arm works, and how the joints that make up the arm function in the same way as those in a human arm. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
The diagram provides the information about the working arm of a machine, along with fucntion of human arm in the joints.
Overall, It can be seen that the it all started from the control of different motors in computer to the function and working principal of each motor, whereas the structure and function of drill machine has also been illustrated.
To begin with, the precision control is consist of three motors each with a particular function. One motor is involved in the working of base which is stationary and seldomly becomes movable it functions to enable arm rotation and when it rotates shoulder raises and lowers arms. the 2nd motor controls the movement of elbow and give flexibility to the elbow.
The 3rd motor is a gripper which has a sensor and controls the force and the wrist allows to rotate or flex. In the same way human arm functions in the joints. Moreover the the structure and function of drill machine is also compared with the working of human arm in the joints of elbow.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You identify the diagram as a mechanical arm and mention several relevant parts, including the motors, elbow, wrist, gripper and their functions. However, the account only partially reports the main features and includes important misreadings. The base is described as a motor-controlled part that enables rotation, although the diagram shows the pivot enabling rotation and the base as usually stationary or occasionally movable. The overview also refers to a “drill machine” and a comparison with human joints, but the right-hand panel shows alternative end-effectors for spraying, drilling and welding; the diagram does not compare a drill machine with a human arm. To improve, give an accurate overview of the computer-controlled motors and arm movements, then describe the pivot, shoulder, elbow, wrist and end-effectors clearly and separately.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response has a basic paragraph structure, moving from an introduction and overview to details, and phrases such as “To begin with” and “Moreover” show an attempt to guide the reader. However, the progression is difficult to follow because several components and functions are combined in the same sentence. For example, the paragraph beginning “One motor is involved in the working of base” moves from the base to rotation and then the shoulder without clearly distinguishing the pivot. The final paragraph also shifts abruptly from the gripper and wrist to human joints and a drill machine. Use one paragraph for the control system and another for the arm’s parts and alternative tools, with clear references and accurate linking.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use some relevant technical vocabulary, including “precision control,” “motors,” “gripper,” “sensor,” “flexibility” and “rotate,” which helps convey the subject. There is also an attempt to vary wording with “working,” “function” and “structure.” However, several choices are inaccurate or awkward for describing this diagram: “working principal” is not the intended meaning, “drill machine” misidentifies the panel of alternative tools, and “seldomly becomes movable” is an unnatural way to describe the base. Spelling errors such as “fucntion” and “principal” also reduce precision. Build a more accurate set of component and movement terms, and check spelling and collocations before finishing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and more extended sentence forms, including the overview clause beginning “Overall” and the sentence linking the wrist and gripper. However, control is inconsistent, and errors sometimes make relationships between parts unclear. Examples include “the precision control is consist of three motors,” “the 2nd motor controls the movement of elbow and give flexibility,” and the run-on sequence “when it rotates shoulder raises and lowers arms.” Articles, agreement and verb forms need attention, as do sentence boundaries and capitalization after full stops. Practise writing one complete sentence for each component and function, checking subject–verb agreement and using punctuation to separate linked ideas.
