IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how a mechanical arm works, and how the joints that make up the arm function in the same way as those in a human arm. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
The diagram illustrates how a mechanical arm works and how the joints that are functioning in a same as human arm while all the motors are controlled precisly by computer.
Three motors are controlled accuretly and there funtions are different. The first motor is directly attached to pivot that enables the arm rotation.Second motor is linked to elbow that enables movement and flexibilty to gripper.
Third motor is directly attached to gripper that have bulit in sensors to control the force.
All the motors are working differently but attached to the computer system that controls the whole system.
There are some extra alternatives to spray paint , drill holes and to weld metals.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
You identify the diagram’s general subject and report several relevant features, including the three motors, computer control, the gripper’s sensors, and the alternative uses of spraying, drilling and welding. However, the account is very brief and does not provide a clear, accurate overview of how the arm’s main joints and sections relate. Some connections are misreported: the first motor is not shown attached directly to the pivot, and the second is not linked to the elbow; the diagram instead links motors to the elbow, arm section near the wrist, and gripper. The shoulder and wrist functions are also omitted. The response is 102 words, below the required 150; the 10 words copied from the prompt were excluded from that count. Develop the sequence and comparisons more fully.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
The response has a basic progression: it introduces the diagram, describes the motors, and ends with alternative applications. Numbering the motors as “first,” “Second,” and “Third” helps the reader follow the points. However, the ideas are compressed into short, loosely connected statements, and there is no clear overview or paragraph structure to guide the reader through the arm from its base to its end-effector. The sentence beginning “All the motors are working differently” repeats the earlier point about their different functions rather than advancing the description. Use a clearer sequence—control system, base and joints, then gripper and alternatives—and connect related details with precise linking phrases.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use some relevant technical vocabulary, including “pivot,” “gripper,” “sensors,” “flexibility,” and “alternative,” which helps convey the diagram’s subject. The range is nevertheless limited, and several spelling errors reduce accuracy: “precisly,” “accuretly,” “funtions,” “flexibilty,” and “bulit.” Some phrasing is also imprecise, such as “working differently” and “extra alternatives,” while “weld metals” is less natural than a more specific description of the process. Aim for accurate spelling and more precise terms for movement and function, such as “rotate,” “raise and lower,” and “end-effector.” This would make the description clearer without requiring unnecessarily complex vocabulary.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
Most of the response uses simple statements, and the reader can generally understand the intended meaning. There is an attempt at a more complex opening with “how … and how …,” but its construction is faulty: “the joints that are functioning in a same as human arm” lacks a complete, natural grammatical structure. Agreement and articles are also problematic in “there funtions are different” and “gripper that have bulit in sensors”; the latter should use a singular verb with “gripper.” Punctuation and spacing are inconsistent, particularly around sentence boundaries. Practise accurate simple sentences first, then add controlled relative clauses to explain each joint’s function. Greater variety is needed, but accuracy should remain the priority.
