IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how a mechanical arm works, and how the joints that make up the arm function in the same way as those in a human arm. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The given diagram illustrates that how a mechanical arm work and how its joints are made to function in a same way as those in human arm.
Overall, this mechanical consist of three motor, each one at different place to help the mechanical arm work properly and it is totally made up from matel.
Initially, this arm is divided into three parts just the as same as human arm with a iron base having a motor conected with pivot which help the arm to rotate and also help's it to rise and lower the arm with two side plates working as shoulder.
Then another joint between two rods containing a motor in that joint which provieds flexibillity working a elbow. Finally, this other iron rod is connected to a hand shaped gripper with built-in sensors to control the force and the last motor isinstalled in this gripper. There are some other alternative end effectors like weldding it togather have it coloured through spray and drilling holes in it to fix it togather.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You identify the diagram’s main subject and describe several relevant features: the three motors, the pivot, shoulder, elbow, gripper and its force sensors, as well as alternative end-effectors. The overview also recognises that the arm has multiple motors and joints. However, some details are unclear or inaccurate: the diagram says the shoulder raises and lowers the arm, while you attribute this function to the pivot; it describes the elbow as allowing movement and flexibility, but your account places a motor in the joint and does not clearly explain its function. The comparison with a human arm is asserted rather than developed, and the wrist’s role in flexing or rotating the gripper is omitted. Clarifying these functions and distinguishing the wrist, shoulder and pivot would make the summary more complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a recognisable overall structure: an introduction, an overview, and a sequence of details introduced by “Initially,” “Then,” and “Finally.” This gives the reader a basic sense of progression from the base towards the gripper. However, the sequence is not always easy to follow because several functions and components are combined in long sentences. For example, the sentence beginning “Initially” moves from the base and pivot to raising and lowering, then to the shoulder, without clearly separating their roles. The final sentence also joins several alternative uses in a confusing way. Use shorter, clearly ordered descriptions and refer consistently to each component so that the relationships between parts are easier to understand.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use relevant topic vocabulary, including “pivot,” “flexibility,” “built-in sensors,” “gripper,” and “alternative end effectors,” which helps convey the diagram’s subject. However, the range and control are limited by repeated general wording such as “arm,” “joint,” and “motor,” and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate or unclear. For instance, “this mechanical” is not a natural way to refer to the machine, and “have it coloured through spray” does not clearly describe spray painting. Spelling errors such as “matel,” “conected,” “flexibillity,” and “weldding” are also noticeable and can distract the reader. Aim for precise component names and standard process vocabulary, and check spelling carefully.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a relative clause in “a gripper with built-in sensors to control the force” and sequencing clauses that describe the arm’s parts. The main ideas are generally recoverable, but some grammatical errors make relationships between components difficult to interpret. The opening “illustrates that how” uses an incorrect clause pattern; write “illustrates how.” There are also errors in articles and agreement, as in “a same way,” “this mechanical consist,” and “three motor.” The sentence beginning “Initially” has an unclear structure, while “which help the arm” does not agree with its singular reference. Review clause construction, subject–verb agreement, articles and sentence boundaries, then proofread to improve accuracy.
