IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how a mechanical arm works, and how the joints that make up the arm function in the same way as those in a human arm. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
The diagram below shows the working process of a mechanical arm and how does the joints make up the arm function, similar to a living creatures arm.
Overall, the making process includes different operating parts, which are then joined together to build the arm. Three motors makeup the arms working performance compared to a human being and helps carry out multiple difficult tasks.
On the one hand, motors which are controlled through a computer, are attached to the base, one to elbow and last one to the gripper of the arm. All of these allows the working performance smoothly.
On the other hand, there are other parts for example, a heavy base having a shoulder on it, which allows the lowering and raising of the arm. Following the same path is a pivot attached to it which allows the rotation and then comes the wrist, thus attached to the gripper, however; both of these are attached through an elbow, enableing all the task performance. All of the connection allows the working performance of the mechanical arm.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You identify the diagram as a mechanical arm and mention several relevant components, including the computer-controlled motors, base, shoulder, pivot, elbow, wrist and gripper. You also note the arm’s similarity to a human arm. However, the description only partially reports the main features: it does not explain the alternative end-effectors (spraying, drilling and welding) or clearly describe how the arm’s joints enable movement. Some details are inaccurate or unsupported, such as calling the base “heavy” and saying the motors are attached to the base. The overview that parts are joined together is also too general to summarise the diagram’s key functions. A clearer account of the control system, joint functions and interchangeable tools would make the response more complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response has a basic structure, with an opening, an overview and two body sections, and it uses signposts such as “Overall,” “On the one hand” and “On the other hand.” These give the reader some sense of organisation. However, the progression is not consistently logical: the first body paragraph groups motors with their connections, while the second moves through components without clearly showing their order or relationship. Phrases such as “Following the same path” and “both of these” make the references difficult to follow. The repeated references to “working performance” also limit development. Organise the description from the computer and motors down through the arm to the end-effector, using clear links between each part.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use some relevant technical vocabulary, including “motors,” “pivot,” “shoulder,” “wrist” and “gripper,” which helps identify the diagram’s components. However, the range is limited and several word choices or combinations are unnatural or imprecise, such as “working performance,” “making process” and “carry out multiple difficult tasks.” “Three motors makeup the arms working performance” is also unclear, and “heavy base” adds a quality not shown in the diagram. Repetition of “allows” and “attached” further restricts the description. Aim for precise functional language, for example, describe the shoulder as raising and lowering the arm and the pivot as enabling rotation. Check spelling and word forms, including “make up” rather than “makeup” when used as a verb.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response attempts both simple and more complex sentences, but complex constructions are often faulty, and errors recur throughout. For example, “how does the joints make up” uses incorrect question word order and subject–verb agreement; “Three motors makeup … and helps” has agreement problems; and “All of these allows” should use a plural verb. The sentence beginning “Following the same path” is difficult to parse, with unclear attachment and a faulty participle in “enableing.” Punctuation also causes problems, particularly the semicolon after “however” and commas separating subjects from verbs. Use shorter, controlled sentences to explain each component, then add subordinate clauses only when the relationships are clear. Review agreement, verb forms, articles and punctuation.
