IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how a mechanical arm works, and how the joints that make up the arm function in the same way as those in a human arm. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 4.5)

The below diagram states that the working of the mechanical arm, and how it functions like as same as the human arm.we will now discuss this topic in a detailed manner.

At first, the mechanical arm works with the help of the help of the motors to rotate, lift and hold the object. It works like same as human arm and can do same work.

The artificial arm contains some parts called base. The entire arm is fexed to base and it movable when it is required. The next part is called shoulder it raises and down the arm. The next one is the elbow makes the movement to wrist.Gripper helps to hold the object and it also fixed sensors to control the force.

The motors are fixed in the three main places in shoulder, elbow and base it helps to make work. The entire arm is contolled by using the computer.

The main advantage of this mechanical arm is make the humans work simple and fast without risk. There are different types of machines like

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

You identify the subject as a mechanical arm and mention several relevant components, including the base, shoulder, elbow, gripper, motors and computer. However, the account only minimally summarises the diagram and does not clearly explain how the parts work together. Some details are inaccurate: the motors are shown above the arm, not fixed at the shoulder, elbow and base, and the base is not described as a motor location. Important functions are also omitted, including the pivot’s rotation, the wrist’s flexing or rotating action, and the gripper’s force sensors. The comparison with a human arm is asserted rather than explained, and the final reference to different machines is left incomplete. A clearer overview and accurate coverage of the main functions would strengthen the response.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

The response has a basic sequence, moving from a general introduction to components and then to the computer and possible advantages. Paragraph breaks provide some organisation, and words such as “At first” and “The next part” signal progression. However, the order is not consistently logical: the motors and computer are discussed after the arm’s components, although they control the system, and the relationship between the parts is not clearly traced. Repeated statements that the arm works like a human arm do not advance the explanation. The final sentence, “There are different types of machines like”, is unfinished, leaving the ending abrupt. Grouping the control system, arm structure and end-effectors into a clear sequence would improve progression.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some relevant topic vocabulary, including “mechanical arm”, “motors”, “shoulder”, “elbow”, “gripper” and “sensors”, so the reader can recognise the subject. However, the range is limited and several expressions are inaccurate or repetitive, such as “works like same as human arm” and “make the humans work simple and fast”. There are also spelling errors in “fexed” and “contolled”, and “fixed to base” does not express the intended idea naturally. More precise terms from the diagram, such as “pivot”, “wrist”, “rotate” and “alternative end-effectors”, would help describe the mechanism. Aim for accurate collocations and avoid repeating general claims when a specific function can be named.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

Most sentences use simple structures, and the basic meaning is often recoverable, for example, “The entire arm is contolled by using the computer.” However, errors are frequent and sometimes make relationships unclear. The opening has a faulty construction: “The below diagram states that the working…”; “it movable” is missing a verb, and “it raises and down the arm” does not form a correct parallel structure. Articles and sentence boundaries are also inconsistent, as in “fixed to base” and “object.It”. The response relies heavily on short, loosely connected clauses, with little accurate use of complex sentences. Practise complete sentences with clear subjects and verbs, and check articles, verb forms, and punctuation when joining clauses.
