IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how a mechanical arm works, and how the joints that make up the arm function in the same way as those in a human arm. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The diagram represents the mechanical arm works with main elements where the process depict that the drill machine is functioning in the way similar to the human arms. The machine's mainly used for spray paint, drill holes and weld the metals.

Firstly, there is a computer system to control the system, same like the human mind control the whole body parts, there are three motors attached with the computrized system designated for three different domains of the arm, these are connected to the gripper, elbow and the base and resposible to control the force through sensorss, allow the movements and enhance the flexibility, and make the base movable.

Furthermore, There are several other parts of the machine as well, for instance the wrist to flex or rotate, pivot which enable the arm to rotate, and shoulder.

Finally, to conclude this, mentioned drill machine is totally matched with human

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You identify the computer, three motors, several arm parts, and the possible uses of the end-effectors, so the response includes relevant features. However, the task is only partially covered: there is no clear, accurate overview of how the arm is arranged or how its parts work together. Some details are misreported: the motors connect to the elbow, arm section near the wrist, and gripper—not the base—and the base is usually stationary, rather than being made movable by a motor. The comparison with a human arm is asserted but not explained, and the final sentence is incomplete. The response is also three words below the required minimum. Develop a clear overview and describe the diagram’s key relationships accurately.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a basic sequence, signalled by “Firstly,” “Furthermore,” and “Finally,” and it groups some related information together. This gives the reader a simple route through the description. However, progression is limited: the opening mixes the diagram’s purpose with an unclear claim about a “drill machine,” while the middle paragraph combines motor connections, sensors, movement, and the base without a clear order. The final paragraph does not complete its concluding idea. Use paragraphs to move from an overview to the control system and then the arm’s components and functions. Make links between ideas more precise, rather than relying mainly on sequencing words.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use some relevant task vocabulary, including “gripper,” “wrist,” “pivot,” “flexibility,” and “sensors,” which helps identify parts and functions. There is also an attempt to describe purpose through “spray paint, drill holes and weld the metals.” However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate or unclear, such as “the process depict,” “three different domains,” and “matched with human.” Spelling errors in “computrized” and “resposible” also reduce accuracy. Choose precise terms from the diagram and use natural collocations, for example, explain that the computer controls the motors and that the gripper can be replaced by other end-effectors. Avoid calling the whole device a drill machine.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and longer sentences, including a sentence beginning “there are three motors attached…,” and use sequencing clauses to organise the account. However, complex sentences are often faulty, and errors frequently make relationships difficult to follow. For example, “The diagram represents the mechanical arm works” lacks a grammatical link between “represents” and “works”; “the process depict” has incorrect subject–verb agreement; and “the wrist to flex or rotate” is a fragment rather than a complete clause. The final phrase, “totally matched with human,” is also incomplete. Practise complete sentence patterns such as “The diagram shows how…” and “The wrist allows the gripper to…”. Check agreement, articles, and sentence boundaries during revision.
