IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how a mechanical arm works, and how the joints that make up the arm function in the same way as those in a human arm. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The provided diagram illustrates the procedures of mechanical arm and the techniques of joints that makeup the arm function as like human arm. As observed, arm has various functions such as pivot, shoulder, wrist, elbow, gripper with three motor.
Now, initially start with arm base, base significantly carries all sectors of it and when get necessary arm can be move for its movable feature. Pivot is the part which enables arm to rotate whereas shoulder helps to raises or lowers arm. Furthermore, elbow considerably allows movement which directly prefer flexibility.
Following this, there is a important part which is wrist. Wrist allows to grip for flex and rotate, its an alternative end-effectors. Gripper is the last feature, gripper helps to control force with built-in sensors. In addition, the noticable thing is shoulder, elbow and gripper are carries over by a common thing which is motor. Motor can be control these parts but these precious motors are particularly control by computer.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify several relevant components and functions, including the base, pivot, shoulder, elbow, wrist, gripper and computer-controlled motors. This gives the reader a basic account of how the arm is assembled and controlled. However, the response only partly covers the diagram: it does not describe the three alternative end-effectors or their uses, and it gives little sense of how the arm’s sections connect from the base to the gripper. Some details are also unclear or inaccurate: the wrist allows the gripper or another end-effector to flex or rotate, rather than allowing it “to grip for flex and rotate,” and the base is usually stationary, though it can sometimes move. Add a concise overview of the system and report these omitted features more precisely.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a basic paragraph structure, and sequencing phrases such as “Now, initially” and “Following this” show an attempt to guide the reader through the components. The information is generally grouped by parts of the arm, so the main topic remains understandable. However, progression is not consistently clear: the opening lists components without explaining their overall relationship, and the final paragraph moves from the wrist and gripper to the motors without a clear transition. Some linking expressions are awkward or repetitive, and references such as “these parts” and “this” do not always make the connections precise. Organise the description in the diagram’s physical order—from base and joints to gripper—then explain the computer and motors as the control system.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant technical vocabulary, including “pivot,” “flexibility,” “built-in sensors,” and “alternative end-effectors,” which helps identify the diagram’s parts. There is also some attempt to vary wording with terms such as “enables” and “significantly.” However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate, making some descriptions difficult to interpret. For example, “the techniques of joints” does not clearly express how the joints function, “grip for flex” is not a natural description of the wrist’s role, and “carries over by a common thing” obscures the relationship between motors and components. Prefer precise, conventional technical phrasing and avoid using emphatic words such as “precious” where they do not add meaning.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and longer sentences, including a contrast with “whereas” and a relative clause in “which directly prefer flexibility.” These attempts show some range, but control is inconsistent, and errors in basic sentence patterns frequently make the meaning less clear. Examples include “arm has various functions” and “a important part,” where articles are missing or incorrect; “shoulder helps to raises,” where the verb form is faulty; and “Motor can be control these parts,” which has an incorrect passive/modal construction. Agreement is also problematic in “shoulder, elbow and gripper are carries over.” Practise accurate subject–verb agreement and verb patterns first, then build longer sentences from those reliable forms.
