IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how a mechanical arm works, and how the joints that make up the arm function in the same way as those in a human arm. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The Given Below Figure showcases that How mechanical arm is used to solve real life problems as well as this Diagram compares with human body

This Figure shows how computer works with the help of motor. There is clear shown that how the body of this machine allows to move and it gives comfort to the motor. It is clearly seen that there are three types of motors working in this diagram. First motor gives comfort to the machine. On the other side the second motor helps the shoulder of that machine to down his arms and there is clearly seen that the third motor allows pivot to rotate. Moreover it shows that there is one wrist in this working machine who gives flexibility to this machine to rotate it's shape and there is also a gripper in this machine that controls the power with the help of sensors.

This whole Picture shows us that machine have same functions in his mechanical arm as it is as a human body have.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

You identify the diagram as a mechanical arm and mention the computer, three motors, wrist, gripper and sensors, so the response is relevant to the task. However, the main features are only partly reported, and several functions are misassigned: the shoulder raises and lowers the arm, while the pivot enables rotation; your response says the second motor moves the shoulder down and the third allows the pivot to rotate. The elbow’s role and the base are not explained, and the alternative end-effectors are omitted. The comparison with a human arm is asserted but not developed. To improve, give a clear overview of the arm’s main joints and functions, then describe their relationships accurately.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

The response has a basic sequence, moving from the computer and motors to the wrist and gripper, and it uses a few linking expressions such as “Moreover” and “On the other side.” However, the ideas do not form a clear overall progression: the functions of the motors, shoulder and pivot are difficult to follow, and the final sentence repeats the general comparison rather than concluding with a summary of the diagram. The opening is also an unclear, lengthy sentence. Organise the report into a brief introduction and overview followed by a logical description of the components, using links such as “at the base,” “above this,” and “at the end of the arm” to clarify positions.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some task-related vocabulary, including “motor,” “wrist,” “gripper,” “flexibility” and “sensors,” which helps identify the components. However, the range is limited and several choices are inaccurate or unnatural for describing a technical diagram. For example, “gives comfort to the motor” does not convey a mechanical function, and “controls the power” is less precise than describing the force applied by the gripper. Repeated use of “machine,” “clearly seen” and “this Figure” also makes the description less precise. Choose verbs that match the labelled functions and use concise technical phrasing, such as “raises,” “rotates,” “controls gripping force” and “is mounted on a base.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and longer sentences, including a sentence beginning “Moreover,” and one using “with the help of,” but control is uneven. Errors in sentence structure and agreement occur in examples such as “there is clearly seen,” “machine have same functions,” and “there is one wrist … who gives flexibility.” Articles and pronouns are also unreliable, as in “as it is as a human body have,” while the opening sentence has confusing capitalisation and punctuation. These problems sometimes make relationships between components hard to understand. Practise accurate present-simple descriptions with clear subjects—for example, “The shoulder raises and lowers the arm”—and check agreement, articles and sentence boundaries.
