IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how a mechanical arm works, and how the joints that make up the arm function in the same way as those in a human arm. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
The diagram illustrates the process of a mechanical arm works, and the processing of joints that make up the arm function in the similar way as those in a people arm.
Overall, it is clear that there are some stages of making a mechanical arm like a human arm. Beginning with computer - precision control of motors and ending up by base(usually stationary/occasionally movable).
To beging with, a computer - precision which controlling three motors for separate working. Next, a motor is control elbow-allows movement/gives flexibility of base (usually stationary/occasionally movable). Another motor is controlling some function of base. And the final motor work by gripper- built-in sensors control force.
Pivot - enables arm to rotate a strong iron of base (usually stationary/occasionally movable). Subsequently, the shoulder - raise/lowers arm can grabing hardly an elbow-allows movement. Eventually, there is a wrist - allows gripper (or alternative end-effector) to flex/rotate gripper.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
You identify the diagram as a mechanical arm and mention several labelled parts, including the computer, motors, pivot, shoulder, elbow and wrist. However, the account does not clearly summarise how the arm operates or compare its joints with a human arm. The overview is inaccurate: the process does not begin with the computer and end at the base; the base supports the arm, while the computer controls the motors. Some relationships are also misreported, such as saying a motor controls a function of the base. The gripper’s role and the alternative end-effectors are omitted. The response is 141 words, below the 150-word minimum, and this limits the coverage of the main features.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response has separate paragraphs and uses basic sequencing expressions such as “Overall,” “To beging with,” “Next,” and “Eventually,” so there is an attempt to organise the description. However, the progression is difficult to follow because the order does not reflect the diagram’s structure, and the links between components are often unclear. For example, “Another motor is controlling some function of base” does not explain how this relates to the preceding point. The final paragraph lists parts without showing how they connect. Organise the report from the base and joints up to the gripper, then describe the computer’s control and the alternative tools, using clear references between sentences.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use several relevant technical labels from the diagram, including “pivot,” “shoulder,” “wrist,” “gripper,” and “motors.” This gives the response some task-specific vocabulary. However, word choice and collocation are often inaccurate or unclear, as in “the processing of joints,” “a strong iron of base,” and “grabing hardly an elbow.” “Computer - precision” also does not express the label’s meaning clearly. Spelling errors such as “beging” and “grabing” further reduce control. Aim to describe functions with precise verbs and phrases, for example, “the pivot enables rotation” and “the shoulder raises or lowers the arm.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
There is an attempt to use both an overview and sequenced sentences, but grammatical control is limited and errors frequently make the relationships between parts hard to understand. The opening, “illustrates the process of a mechanical arm works,” combines incompatible structures; use “illustrates how a mechanical arm works.” Verb forms and agreement are also problematic in “a computer … which controlling three motors” and “the final motor work.” Articles and sentence construction need attention in phrases such as “a motor is control elbow.” Most sentences are simple or incomplete, with little accurate complex structure. Practise forming complete subject–verb sentences and checking tense, agreement, and articles before adding more complex clauses.
