IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how a mechanical arm works, and how the joints that make up the arm function in the same way as those in a human arm. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The diagram illustrates the parts of the mechanical arm, which is performed same has the human arms..

Overall, it is clear that the mechanical is possble to used for spray paint, drill holes, and weld metal. In contrast, it has a total three moters which are helps to provide movement like human arm. While, the base remained steady or have a movement occasionally.

The noticeable feature is that the whole arm have three moters in it, which is connected to the computer and through that it controled precisions of the arm. However, the base of the arm usually remain stationary or moved occasionally. Moreover, the sholder connected to base which provide movement to rise of lower to arm. Piot provide access to rotate arm in each direction and elbo allows flexibilty to arm. Additionally, grip help to grap any thing and it is made up with sensors to control force , while wrist provide rotation to gripper. Along with all part movement it possible alter work of spray paint, drill holes, and weld metal.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You cover the main components and functions, including the computer-controlled motors, the base, shoulder, pivot, elbow, wrist and gripper, and you mention the three alternative uses shown. The overview also identifies the arm’s movement and its comparison with a human arm. These details make the response relevant and broadly complete. Some features, however, are reported less fully: the diagram shows three motors linked to different parts, but their individual connections are not explained, and the human-arm comparison is asserted rather than developed. The description of the shoulder and pivot is also difficult to interpret. To strengthen the response, give a clearer overview of how the arm is controlled and describe the parts in their physical order, distinguishing their functions more precisely.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has an opening, an overview and a further paragraph of component details, so there is some organisation. It also uses linking expressions such as “Overall,” “Moreover” and “Additionally.” However, the progression is not consistently clear: the motors and base are mentioned in the overview and then repeated, while the final sentence returns to the alternative uses without a clear connection to the preceding explanation. Some links are awkward or inaccurate, particularly “While” at the start of a sentence and “Along with all part movement.” Grouping the description in the arm’s physical order—from base and pivot to shoulder, elbow, wrist and gripper—and using fewer, more precise transitions would make the information easier to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant technical vocabulary, including “motors,” “sensors,” “force,” “pivot” and “flexibility,” and you attempt to describe functions rather than simply list labels. This gives the response a task-appropriate range, but inaccurate word forms, spelling and collocations are noticeable and sometimes make the meaning less clear. Examples include “moters,” “sholder,” “Piot,” “elbo” and “grap,” as well as “provide access to rotate arm” and “control precisions.” Choose the diagram’s exact terms and check their spelling; also use natural verb–noun combinations such as “allow the arm to rotate” and “control the force applied.” This would improve precision without requiring more elaborate vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt a mixture of simple statements and longer sentences, including clauses introduced by “which” and “while.” However, grammatical control is uneven, and errors in agreement, verb forms, articles and sentence construction occur throughout. For example, “the mechanical is possble to used” lacks a clear noun and uses an incorrect verb form, while “the whole arm have three moters” has subject–verb disagreement. “The base remained steady or have a movement occasionally” also shifts tense and does not form a clear parallel structure. Some sentences remain understandable, but these errors can make relationships between parts and functions difficult to follow. Practise accurate simple sentences first, then combine them with controlled relative clauses, checking agreement and verb patterns.
