Student answer (Band 4.0)

This diagram illustartes that mechanical arm works, and joints in it assist arm function in same way as human arm.

Overall, it is noticeable that base of arm work is which is usually stationary or occassionally moveable above base their is shoulder which helps in movement of arm. Shoulder is attached with pivtol which enables arm to rotate.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.0

The response identifies the diagram as a mechanical arm and mentions the base, shoulder and pivot, including the pivot’s rotational function. However, it does not summarise the main features sufficiently: the elbow, wrist, gripper, computer-controlled motors and alternative end-effectors are all omitted, and there is no meaningful comparison with a human arm. The overview is also unclear, particularly the statement that the “base of arm work is” followed by an incomplete description. The response is substantially below the required 150 words, leaving the task very incomplete. To improve, describe the arm’s main components and functions, explain how the motors are controlled, and include the interchangeable tools shown in the diagram.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

There is a basic attempt to organise the response: an opening sentence introduces the diagram, followed by a paragraph beginning “Overall” that mentions parts of the arm. This gives the reader a minimal sense of topic and sequence. However, the second paragraph is difficult to follow because the relationships between the base, shoulder and pivot are not expressed clearly; “above base their is shoulder” is especially confusing. The response also ends without covering the rest of the diagram, so the progression feels incomplete. Use separate, purposeful paragraphs for an overview and the component details, and connect each part in a clear order from the base through to the gripper.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

The response uses a small set of relevant terms, including “mechanical arm,” “shoulder,” “pivot,” and “stationary,” and it attempts to describe functions with “enables arm to rotate.” This shows some task-related vocabulary. However, the range is very limited, and spelling errors such as “illustartes,” “occassionally” and “pivtol” reduce accuracy. Some phrasing is also imprecise, including “base of arm work is,” which does not clearly convey the intended feature. Build a wider vocabulary for describing components and functions, such as “joint,” “flex,” “rotate,” “control” and “end-effector,” and check spelling and natural word combinations before submitting.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The response attempts both a simple introductory sentence and a longer sentence describing the arm, but grammatical control is inconsistent. For example, “mechanical arm works” is missing an article, while “base of arm work is” has problems with article use and subject–verb agreement. The sequence “above base their is shoulder” also contains errors in sentence structure and punctuation that make the relationship between parts hard to understand. The final clause, “which enables arm to rotate,” again omits an article. Use complete, clearly structured sentences and check articles, agreement and punctuation. A wider range of accurate sentence patterns would also help explain how the components connect and function.
