IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how a mechanical arm works, and how the joints that make up the arm function in the same way as those in a human arm. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The diagram illustrates how a mechanical arm works, and how the joints that make up the arm function in the same way as those in a human arm.

Overall, it is clear that the mechanical arm contain on three motors, which is computer control motors.

In the mechanical arm have work through three motors, the motors contorl through computer. one have fit at the lower arm of mechanical arm use for arm rotate and raising lower arm. while the second motor is engineered in middle area, to alows movement and gives flexibility for raising and contracting.

The motor is use in the head of mechanical arm, to help in arm work, allows gripper, alternative end effector to flex, and built in sensors control force. The base area usually stationary and occasionally movable. So like this it is ready for ulternative end effectors, for example spray paint, drill holes and weld metal.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

You identify the diagram’s general subject and mention the computer-controlled motors, the base, and possible end-effectors such as spraying, drilling and welding. However, the account is incomplete and some functions are confused: the pivot enables rotation, the shoulder raises and lowers the arm, and the wrist allows the gripper to flex or rotate, but these distinctions are not clearly reported. The overview is also limited, and the comparison with human-arm joints in the prompt is not developed. The response contains 126 words, below the required 150; 25 words copied from the prompt were not counted. Add a fuller, accurate description of the arm’s parts and their functions, and explain the human-joint comparison.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

There is a basic attempt to organise the response, beginning with an introduction and an overall statement before describing components and giving examples of alternative end-effectors. This gives the reader some sense of the topic. However, the progression is difficult to follow because the parts are not described in a clear physical sequence, and several ideas are crowded into long, loosely connected sentences. For example, the sentence beginning “In the mechanical arm have work through three motors” shifts between motor control, rotation and raising the arm without clear links. Use separate sentences or paragraphs to describe the control system, the arm from base to gripper, and the alternative tools. More precise linking and reference would make the relationships easier to understand.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use some relevant technical vocabulary, including “motors,” “base,” “gripper,” “sensors,” and “end effectors,” and the examples of spraying, drilling and welding show an attempt to cover the diagram’s range. However, word choice and spelling are often inaccurate or repetitive, which sometimes makes the intended meaning unclear. Phrases such as “the mechanical arm contain on three motors” and “one have fit at the lower arm” are not natural descriptions, while “contorl,” “alows,” and “ulternative” contain spelling errors. Some terms are also assigned imprecisely, such as describing the motor as being “in the head.” Build accuracy with standard collocations such as “is controlled by,” “is attached to,” and “raises or lowers,” and check spelling of technical vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The response attempts a few longer sentences and uses a basic overview structure, but grammatical control is limited. Errors in agreement, verb forms and sentence construction occur frequently and can obscure the relationships between components. For instance, “the mechanical arm contain on three motors” needs a correct subject–verb form and construction, while “In the mechanical arm have work through three motors” lacks a clear grammatical subject. The sentence beginning “one have fit” also combines several actions without a reliable clause structure. Most sentences rely on simple patterns, and the longer attempts are often faulty. Practise accurate basic clauses first—for example, “The computer controls three motors”—then connect them with clear relative clauses such as “The shoulder, which raises and lowers the arm, is above the base.”
